CL Softball has Date with Billies Today in Boerne @ 6pm
Now the fun times begin as Canyon Lake will have an opportunity to have a good opponent to do battle with before facing the 2nd or 3rd seeded team in District 27-4A.
La Vernia is ranked in some polls as they have a decent record of, 24-4-1 and CL can vouch for how tough the Bears can be after spending two years in the same district.
Canyon Lake missed some games during the season due to rain and having another opportunity for a game that can go 7 innings will be a good indicator of how well CL’s pitching can hold up for this time of year.
Many of those first games in a season are in a variety of being timed and as a result not having a bona-fide 7 inning games which will the template of how district games will always transpire unless a team is able to shorten the affair due to run ruling their opponent.
In the 4 games that were played with Boerne and Fredericksburg, the Hawks had two things happen.
1) The pitchers were not as strong to end the game.
2) The offense did not score a run during district in the second inning. Not only for Boerne and Fredericksburg, but Hondo and Bandera were also able to hold CL scoreless for the 2nd inning.
In response to #1 above, the Hawks, gave up 15 runs in their final 3 innings in the four games against the Greyhounds and Billies.
Those are numbers that would give you one reason for the 1-3 record in those contests.
Likewise, Canyon Lake scored 4 runs in the first 3 innings in those same games and also knowing that the 2nd was a big 0 in the run department.
Can the Hawks change those trends? If the answer is yes, then having a better chance in reaching higher goals can be realized.
This Hawk team does have the ability of going more than one round in the playoff realm and having all three aspects performing would go a long way in helping to get to some lofty goals.
Defensively, CL is still at an unknown since the win over Bandera was nice, but expecting to strikeout 14 of the 15 outs in a game is not realistic.
We know that Canyon Lake can score runs but the keys for this year’s club will come from scoring earlier in a game and with enough runs that those later innings would not become an issue.
Fielding the hits has to turn around quickly to help bring this part of the season’s games with better end results.
Canyon Lake will know who they will be playing the end of this week based on the Fredericksburg outcome.
A win? Then a date with a familiar opponent in Navarro will be planned.
A loss? Then a date with La Vernia will be forthcoming. Canyon Lake has not played the Bears this year and the last game was a win bring a dismal district season last year to a close.
The Bears had 133 runs in their first 10 games this season so scoring runs is not a problem….L V won their first 15 games and were 21-1 when they lost to Navarro at the end of March. That was a beginning of a 3 game losing streak as Wimberley shut them out in their last game.
The Bears Losses: Edinburg 25-02 record Antonian Prep 21-10 Wimberley 20-05 Navarro 14-9-2
Beatable, but this team knows how to win and the Hawks will do well with a win against Fredericksburg. Having momentum will be good to have when the games get to this time frame.
Canyon Lake will do battle in Boerne against the Billies with the game starting at 6pm….get on the road and support the Hawks!!
