CLJV Hawks Smell Like a Rose in Win over Blanco, 16-14
Canyon Lake’s JV squad started their season smelling like a rose after scoring a 16-14 win over Blanco JV.
“This looked like it was our first game of the year,” Head JV Coach John Barthels stated. “We did respond in the second half and our last drive wore them down and our kids played hard.”
There was certainly some rust on both sides of the ball as offense was not a thing of beauty when both teams retired for their halftime talk and the Hawks having a 37 to 34 lead in yardage gained.
Clay Weber was one of many Hawk defenders that helped shut down the Panthers.
“We just got after it,” Weber surmised. “We came out with a higher mentality and we just get better with more stops and turnovers for our next game.”
All the scoring commenced in the 2nd Half as the Panthers were first when they took the ball 56 yards with a nifty 44 yard run by #2 Panther who made the corner and then tight roped the sideline to paydirt.
Their extra point was off with an incompletion which would become one of the biggest plays of this game as those 2 points would be needed for the Blanco JV to finish with a tie instead of a loss.
That Panther lead lasted 15 seconds as Connor Rose took the kick-off back for 73 yards for a score and lead after Almond ran the extra point in for the Hawks first lead in the game.
“I was mad because they scored and I was mad because i fumbled,” Rose stated when asked about his two scores. “I just followed Caleb’s (Almond) and the offensive line’s blocks for the score.”
Blanco controlled the clock for the 3rd quarter as that 15 second run-back was the only time your Hawks had the ball.
The Panthers finished their drive on the first play of the 4th quarter by the same player #2 as the danced through traffic for the score with 9:57 left in the game. Blanco would be successful with their pass as they got back in the driver’s seat with a 14-8 lead.
That Blanco drive was kept alive when CL had their only penalty of the game with a roughing the passer on an interception play that gave the Panthers new life and a the score.
Canyon Lake had their best drive of 48 yards on their first offensive possession in the 2nd Half while playing in the last quarter.
The drive took 12 plays as CL converted a third down with 14 yards needed when Cody Kline followed an Almond block for 16 yards and the 3rd first down of the contest.
Rose would make the corner for a 15 yard scamper that helped put Canyon Lake at the Blanco 12 yard line and right at 4 minutes to go in the game.
The Hawks would convert a 4th Down needing 3 yards from the 5 yard line as the Hawks were smelling like a Rose for the score.
Cody Kline would wait for the right time to get a pass off to Jacob Neel for the score and final score, 16-14.
Blanco could not get anything going on their next possession as the Hawks would get their last two tackles behind the line as CL finished off the hard fought game and getting the win.
Canyon Lake JV will be home next week when they go against Austin Reagan at the Hawk Nest.
The Hawk Freshman team was also victorious with a, 38-12 win over St. Anthony as it was a good start to their high school career.
Congrats and Go Hawks!!
