What a Difference a Week Makes in JV Hawk Win over Reagan, 36-0

QB Brandon Robinson converts a 4th Down with a 17 yard run that helped energize a Hawk Win over Austin Reagan.                (mjrphotog.com)

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity improved their record to 2-0 after taking care of the Reagan Raiders as the Hawks opened their first home game of this year with a convincing win, 36-0.

“We just had a week of consistent practice and we moved people around,” Head JV Coach John Barthels noted. “It was just a matter of getting our players in the right spot.”

Coach Barthels comments were in response on how this team look so different than their first outing against Blanco.

In this game, Canyon Lake was up 8-0 when they were facing a fourth and three yards needed on the Austin Reagan’s 35 yard line. A game that had the Hawks after their first possession and nothing that had said wow yet.

Don Chente says Way to Go Hawks!!

Then it happened when QB Brandon Robinson went back for a pass and found himself in a heap of trouble as the Raiders were closing in on what looked like an 8 to 10 yard loss….then Robinson took off for the sideline and after having every Raider in the game taking a hit on Robinson’s run, the pin-ball gallop turned into what would be a 17 yard first down run.

“That run was huge for us,” Coach Barthels said. “It got me excited!”

That was a run of beauty as Robinson just refused to go down. It was reported that there might have been some more Raiders having a chance of getting the tackle coming off the sideline.

Yes, The ReSporter, knows that actually did not happen, but this run seemed to have more than 11 hits on the run. The play gave the Hawks a first down and a boost of energy as the Hawks would score two plays later on an Ethan Slater 6 yard run.

“I realized that we needed 3 yards for a first down,” Robinson recollected. “I saw the pocket collapse behind me and I just took off and saw the sideline.”

CL’s Defensive Tackle Anthony Brown (#63) takes down the Austin Reagain ball carrier.

A lost fumble on AR next possession had the Hawks with the ball on their 40 yard line.

Another Robinson run up the middle that gained 8 yards was followed by a Connor Rose 32 yard touchdown run after changing direction in mid-stream to the open field and touchdown.

The Hawks were not finished as the last play before Halftime had Matthew Rivera jumping a Raider pass route for a clean pick and run for 26 yards that had CLJV enjoying a 28 point lead.

“When I saw their quarterback had thrown the ball and it was wobbling,” Rivera remembers. “I just sat back and waited and I did not want to over run the ball.”

What a difference a week made as this was not the same team seen on the Blanco field a week earlier. Yes a win, but there was nothing in that, 16-14 win that yelled that this team might continue the recent run of very good Junior Varsity squads.

There were 9 CL Hawks that had a chance to carry the ball on the night and there was not a drop off at any time as Coach Barthels would send in another Hawk ready to tote the ball.

                       Go Hawks!!

Credit would be in order for the offensive line on the night as the defensive side was just as good with the shut-out.

Only 47 yards of offense was in the cards for the Raiders during that first half that allowed the offense to continue their run to daylight for a well deserved win.

Canyon Lake would convert two 4th down plays as the first time had CL holding down the fort on the Raider 9 yard line on their opening drive of the game.

Robinson would take the snap on this try and find Robert Beam open in the end-zone on what would be the only pass needed for this night and a good cap-off for a drive that got things going for the Hawks.

Field position was key with the Hawks averaging starting at mid-field for the game. Canyon Lake took advantage for a win that will have them back in action next week at home as the Giddings Buffaloes come calling for a Thursday night engagement.

Connor Rose scores with a Ethan Slater running some interference on the scamper.

What a difference a week made after the Blanco contest and seeing the two different teams, The ReSporter will cast a vote in seeing this Hawk team for their next game.

“We came into this game with a different mindset and a completely new attitude,” Robinson closed.

That offensive and defensive line was vastly improved as the Hawks averaged over 8 yards per carry in the win.

“We made adjustments in practice,” Offensive Lineman Marshall Netting surmised. “We were more disciplined and we had numbers all around the ball.”

Defensive Back, Rivera also gave his 2 cents worth for the difference from week one to this game, “Our team practiced harder and we got our mind together and it did not matter how big they were.”

Good Win and Go Hawks!!
