Don Chente says Go Hawks!!

The Hawk Volleyball team finished this past week with their ledger sheet reading a win and loss after CL beat Bandera on Friday to finish their first round of District 28-4A play in second place.

A game with Fredericksburg on Wednesday was the deciding game that determined how the top two teams would be seeded for that first round of district games.

That Billies game was scheduled for a Tuesday night, but there was a mix-up and no officials scheduled, causing a delay from the regular Tuesday night contest.

That had the Volleyballl team having to return home for a make-up date that next day.

Could that have been the reason for a Billie sweep? Probably not as Fredericksburg has become the Hawks Wimberley game from year’s past. This school has only lost once to the Hawks two years ago while CL’s team was not playing in the same district that year.

                CL Soars High

If everything plays like the first round then the second round of games, Canyon Lake, will make the playoffs as the 2nd Seed and play the 3rd seed school in District 27-4A.

That would be a possible match-up with Wimberley for the first round and a repeat of last year’s first round opponent. The Texans finished their first round with a 2-2 record and a game with Gonzales will determine who will be that 3rd place team when the two schools meet again.

Wimberley swept the Indians in their first round contest so you could easily see how those teams will finish in two weeks.

The Hawk’s football crew, had a good game in their win over Austin Akins on the gridiron last Friday.

A 56 point game had the Hawks scoring in bunches and carrying a win to the finish line against their 6A foe.

The game started with Akins enjoying 2 seven point leads but the Hawk defense mustered 4 stops to help give the offense a chance to break the game up and eventual win.

Canyon Lake has had a year where several players have been missing in action as injuries have led to some rest and healing time. There are some players that will not return this year but most of those injuries have players returning for later games.

This CL schedule has the first open date coming after the 8th game and that will have a school playing for several weeks in a row. That has a chance for a team to be on the tired side by the end of the season.

That would make some of these injuries a blessing in disguise with rest coming as a result for a player recovering from those bruises coming from the field of play. So, in a way, Canyon Lake has a chance of entering District 14-4A Division I play in good shape based on how well those injuries heal.

Another trait that has been witnessed a time or two is seeing those returning players itching for seeing the field, having some break out games.

Micah St. John and Taner Faris are two examples of players that missed more than 2 games and returning with a little more vigor and what seems to be fresh legs in the back field in this case. For the defense, the same can be said for LB Parker Reno.

This will also reap benefits from having those players that replaced those injured students getting more reps and game experience that might not have been possible.

With Boerne and Fredericksburg having super campaigns up to this point, you can see that this has the potential of being a district with more teams having a legit chance of being on top of the heap after everything is said and done.

Taylor lost several quality players off their Championship run last year but Boerne and the Billies seem to have discovered a new found game, as each school is playing at a high level.

With a Greyhound and Bille first game scenario this week, a winner will have cleared a major hurdle and having a chance of representing the District 14’s schools.

Canyon Lake will be odds on favorite with their game with Eastside and Taylor will lick their wounds after a loss to Bellville last Friday with a bye this week.

Should be a fun few weeks coming up and a chance to go on the road or stay home and watch Canyon Lake finish their race with a chance of bringing home their first district championship.
