Coaches Corner with the Hawk’s Charley Drum
The ReSporter: Give us an idea of where this Boerne game stacks up with previous Hawk battles?
Coach Drum: “It is right up there with our district championship game last year and also our game with Boerne last season….we don’t know where the chips will fall but we have 3 teams that can make it.”
The ReSporter: How is the team with their health issues as we have had several players out this year?
Coach Drum: “We have not played with our starting players since the first half of the Blanco game. We have almost everyone that will be suited up to play. But we are still missing one or two players.”
The ReSporter: Is this the best team you have met this year?
Coach Drum: “Them and Wimberley but the difference is the quarterback…He (Klutts) can throw and they have some good receivers, but he (Klutts) is not afraid to tuck and run.”
“This is the most talented team we will play….they have players that are good in all three phases (offense, defense, and special teams) and that makes them one of the best teams we have played.”
The ReSporter: We are looking at a team that is as committed to the pass as we are committed to the run, Boerne has played a Slot-T school earlier this year but that team threw the ball 23 times.
Coach Drum: “Our Slot is more power based than Medina Valley but they’re are still a lot of similarities.”
The ReSporter: This game is a road contest, is that easier or harder game for the Hawks?
Coach Drum: “I think it helps a little playing at home but it is also nice to be on a bus as that is when the preparation starts and it is usually a quiet bus ride. There is not a lot of waiting around and the tension and anxiousness when you go on the road.”
The ReSporter: Compare this game to your two earlier games with Giddings and Wimberley.
Coach Drum: “This game will have both of those games rolled into one…..with Giddings we were playing in front of a hostile environment and with Wimberley we were playing against a talented quarterback. Those two games will help in preparing us for Boerne.”
The ReSporter: You mentioned last year on having your bye week as the 2nd to last game of the season and you wondered on how to keep your team fresh as the season wore on. This year you did not have to make decisions as the injury bug helped in resting your team.
Coach Drum: “Yeah, this year we did not have a choice. The players that lost games to injuries has made them excited when they come back and that, with being a senior laden team, will help going into this week’s game. We have a lot of players that have played lots of football.”
The ReSporter: Thanks Coach and good luck on Friday night!!
