Canyon Lake had an awesome week and will hope to continue that trend as these next 6 days bring all of those challenges.
The Hawk Football team will take center stage after their victory over Pleasanton last Friday in San Antonio. This time around CL will be pitted against their toughest foe to date as La Vega will bring their arsenal to the arena for an epic battle this coming Friday at Kelly Reeves Stadium in Round Rock.
La Vega has lost just 2 games in their last 43 contests. Canyon Lake was one of those losses as that Hawk game was a Bi-District affair during the 2014 campaign. A 49-26 result as this game had the Pirates starting a freshman QB (coaches son) and now this young man is taking snaps as their Senior QB.
The next year, these same two foes, would meet again and a different result as CL lost, 42-10 to the eventual State Champion that season.
Canyon Lake does have some love, as the Texas Football site has your Hawks holding down the 6th place spot. That poll was conducted at the end of the regular season and presently those 10 teams that made that ranking still has 9 of those schools still competing.
In fact, Region IV has 4 teams that made that final poll and are still playing. Region ! and Region II have 2 teams a piece remaining with Region III with 1 team still taking snaps.
A ‘Pigskin’ power rating, shows the Hawks holding down 9th place on their rankings, as this week will be classified as a Sweet 16 contest.
Fun time of the year as Canyon Lake will be looking for their 11th victory this Friday.
The Lady Hawk Basketball team had a significant conquest when they outlasted the Boerne Champion Chargers, 41-38. CL has not played many games with a full crew yet this season as Sophomore Chelsea Tschoepe was recovering from an injury during the last Hawk wins.
Beating a 5A school and counting a District 28-4A foe as a win has given a shot of adrenaline to this CL team.
A good crew of Seniors with some very capable Sophomores has this crew sporting a 10-2 record with a chance for some more wins this week, as Eagle Pass Winn will come to the Hawk Nest on Tuesday. Later this week, CL will be in New Braunfels for their tournament.
Last year’s team had a learning curve with several players seeing time on the varsity as Freshman. The key is seeing how well those younger players can continue to make strides so this season can mirror how well the Hawk Boy’s did last season.
With some hard knocks last year, Canyon Lake has a bigger glove when they go to the hardwood this time around.
CL Boys Basketball are presently on a 2 game winning streak and will be playing Somerset on the road this Tuesday. The Bulldogs will be playing their first game with a full court as a loss in their football game last Friday will release some of those athletes to round-ball action.
The Hawks will be at the Marion Tournament this week-end as they too, will continue to mature as this season gets going in earnest.
Canyon Lake’s Swimming crew will have their last competition before the Christmas break as they will be in Burnet competing against schools their own size in the All-Comers teams that are 4A or lower in size. The Hawks have fared well in this meet as they have won the last two years.
Go Hawks!!
