Lady Hawks Continue Winning Ways with a 3-1 Canyon Tourney Finish

Canyon Lake started their tournament in New Braunfels against Stony Brook which has had recent success on the hard wood as this upstart Hawk team just missed an upset after taking SB to overtime in their loss, 53-49.

CL would then proceed to win their next 3 games with some degree of authority to run their record to 14-3 during this young season.

          Way to Go Lady Hawks!!

Reagan Heun broke a record held since 2009 when Ashley Pfaff scored 35 points in her game against Wimberley. Heun was on, during this battle, as she was a regular at the free throw line where 16 of her points were scored to reach 37 for the game. In her 4 contests, Heun pumped in 83 points, as the charity stripe was working as she sank 44 free throws on 55 attempts for a sparkling 80% percentage.

Alexa Ramos missed that first game set-back but rebounded with a 17 point outing against Brackenridge and finished her 3 game stint with 27 points and a nifty 8 steals in the Brackenridge contest and 16 for the tournament.

This Hawk team has been red hot and many of those points are coming from a stifling defense, as CL continues to hassle any guard that would like to dribble into this Hawks hornet’s nest. Ramos is joined by several other Hawk players that continue to get in the face of their opponents while coming away with some easy baskets.

An overtime loss and then 3 games that had your Hawks outscoring those teams by 58 points, as Canyon Lake, finished their demolition derby by demolishing Alamo Heights, 43-9 in a game that was over after the first quarter. CL started with 12 points in that first period which would have been enough points to beat The Heights Ladies.

Freedom Mail Center says Way to go Hawks!

“This team is doing some things and are starting to run our whole offense,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “We have multiple options and we are a lot further down the road than where we were this time last year.”

That is certainly a true statement as this Hawk team has already surpassed last year’s win total as Canyon Lake uses 5 sophomores throughout each contest and have amassed 14 victories with several more dates before this year is over.  This Hawk team has their sights set on the gold standard by the 2009-10 team that reached 19 victories.

2009-10 Season (gold standard) 19 wins

“Our key to this team is our defense,” Coach Burleson continued. “Our defensive rebounding percentage dictates what we do and this team just plays off of each other.”

That has been true so far this season, as the Hawks, will have a player get a tip that goes to another CL player and who would get the credit for a steal. Canyon Lake has 214 steals that has a 12 per game average. The Hawk defense is a lock-down and the main reason for this early season success.

Sophomore Caroline Kullberg was moved up from JV this year but she did have some cameo appearances last year but now is a mainstay as she continues to improve and with her height, gives CL more weapons that Coach Burleson alluded to above.

“I am feeling more comfortable and I am playing for the team,” Kullberg said matter of factly. “ I did not play with the varsity much last season but we are getting better with our passing and we are running our plays and doing it efficiently.”

Canyon Lake will have one more tournament in Comfort later this month and at this writing CL has protected The Hawk Nest with a 6-0 record.

The Lady Hawks next home game will on the 15th of this month and this week there will be two road contests at Florence on Tuesday and Friday at SA Randolph.

Go Hawks!!
