Hawks Split Saturday’s Games Finish, 3rd Place in Comfort Tourney
Canyon Lake beat Hondo for 3rd place in the Comfort Tournament as the Hawks reached 21 wins and will be back in action on January 2nd in Johnson City.
The Hawks and Hondo were both as cold as ice as each team could only muster 2 points a piece in the first period of play. The Owls basket was counted in the first minute of play while CL scored on a Caroline Kullberg put back with 1 minute remaining. A frigid 19% from the field in the first half and Canyon Lake was just one point from a tie going into their halftime locker session.
Hondo was just as frigid and the Owls left a lot of points at the free throw line as they finished this game 8 for 20 helping the Hawks to stay close enough for an eventual win.
This was the second contest between the two District 28-4A foes and Canyon Lake will see this same crew twice more during their district round robin. The next contest with Hondo will have the Owls visiting the Hawk Nest on Friday, January 12th.
Canyon Lake outscored Hondo, 24-12 in the second half as the taller Hawks started controlling the paint while forcing 10 steals in those two last quarters. Those steals resulted into some easy baskets as CL got some separation as their largest lead being the final score, 35-24.
Lainee Moses was the only Hawk to reach double figures as her two consecutive 3 pointers in the 4th quarter was too much for the Owls to hoot at as the Hawks proved to be the tougher bird for this game.
“We just needed to execute and adjust our defense to their offense,” Moses said. “Defense wins and I know how hard it is to dribble when a defender is making it difficult to move the ball.”
Moses was one of several Hawks that made Owl scoring a a frigid event as both games played this year has Hondo with a combined 44 points. “We were tired but we knew we would be OK.”
This was a tough two days when a team is missing two starters, which will make every foul amplified for a coach.
“Hondo make life difficult,” Head Coach Zach Burleson deduced. “We were lethargic and it was tough getting it going but we were fueled with the sparks by Marley (Carrizales) and Lainee (Moses) defensively.”
Canyon Lake first game of the day was a hard fought loss against Comfort, 56-48. The game was a nail biter as CL had a 46-45 lead with 3:40 left in that final period.
The Comfort Deer’s were able to outscore the Hawks, 11-2 in those final minutes with most coming from the foul line as CL had to foul to have a chance of scoring.
Canyon Lake started slow in this game too as the Hawks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first minute of play before the cold front infiltrated the arena. The Hawk’s one point first quarter lead was a result of a Chelsea Tschoepe 40 footer with just 0.035 left on the clock.
Tschoepe was not finished as she led a trio of Hawks with 16 points and 4 three-pointers helped bring CL back into the game after Comfort had forged into a 13 point lead, 26-13 at the end of the first half.
Caroline Kullberg and Reagan Heun were two other Hawks able to reach double digit scoring with, 13 & 11 points consecutively.
With 32 turnovers, CL would not be able to sustain enough consistency to will this game into their favor.
Canyon Lake will be back in action on January 2nd in Johnson City when the JV squad will tip-off at 11am and Varsity gets going at 12:30 or after the JV contests.
