Canyon Lake rushed out for a 37-17 halftime lead, as the Hawks, put a leash on the Bulldogs and now rest atop District 28-4A with a 3-1 record after the first round of play, beating Bandera, 57-32.

The Hit Man says Go Lady Hawks!!

This game started with Bandera methodically scoring the first 4 points within the first tminute of the contest. Not a situation that Head Coach Zach Burleson was pleased with.

As he called a time-out after 45 seconds of action.

“We had a big win on Thursday (Fredericksburg game) and I took a timeout to let them know that we did not need to overlook anybody,” Coach Burleson recalled. “We played pretty good basketball but we just did not hit anything to start the game.”

CL had every player scoring points in this 25 point victory that had all but two players score in that 2nd quarter giving the Hawks the separation needed for a run-a-way win. The Hawks hit 3 shots beyond the arc during that 2nd period.

One of those 3 point shots was a kiss off the back board when Char Hutson shot from the corner with 3:22 on the clock during the Hawk run and 27-16 lead. After a Bandera made free throw, Canyon Lake would get a Marley Carrizales shot from an assist by Lainee Moses and then a Jessie Melendez free throw after an offensive rebound and foul by a Bulldog in a 30 second span and 30-17 Hawk lead.

CL Hawks soar High in Win

A Reagan Heun rebound, after another missed Bandera shot,  had Moses streaking down the court and a sweet pass and another quick two points. Then Melendez would respond with a 3 point play the old fashion way with less than a minute left in this Hawk blitz of a quarter.

Moses then found a burning bush with a shot right before the horn and Canyon Lake’s was parted with a 10 point onslaught in the last 2 minutes of the 2nd quarter and 20 point Hawk lead going into their halftime conversations.

Every Hawk had a rebound and all but one player got a steal as CL put the word team on their jersey for this evening. Canyon Lake’s largest lead came after the 3rd quarter when the Hawks outscored Bandera by 9 points in that period and a 29 point lead entering their last 8 minutes of play.

Another great ending to the 3rd quarter was in the cards when Carrizales would drain a 3 pointer from the corner near the Hawk bench with less than a second on the clock and Hawk advantage, 50-21.

Alayna-Gayle says  Go Hawks!

Heun led with 17 points and Jessie Melendez cleaned the glass with 10 rebounds as this group of ladies will now take a week off before welcoming Boerne into the Hawk Nest next Friday for another huge battle.

“Coming off the Fred game we finally woke up in the 2nd quarter and started to execute,” Heun talked bout how the Hawks have dominated the 2nd period of play in their last two wins. “We have worked hard for this and we have exceeded my expectations. We have grown up and having our younger girls, Caroline (Kullberg) today and we have different players each time making plays.”

On the slow start? “We had a flat practice yesterday and we really had to focus and this has been one of the most fun seasons…..I just can’t explain what this means.”

A lot of firsts for this team as Canyon Lake has set up their Nest on the top of the District 28-4A tree as they will now have one more round of games for a chance of being the top ‘dog’. (sorry Bandera)

This district now has 4 teams bunched up with just one game of separation with the second round commencing this coming Tuesday.

On what this team will be doing as they wait a week before their rematch with Boerne which happened to be the only loss during that first round of contests.

“Watch film and reflect on what happened last time we played Boerne,” Heun recalled. “It took Boerne 26 seconds to score 5 points and that took us out of our game the last time we played them.”

“We will be more prepared,” Coach Burleson started. “We will try to have some shorter practices because we have put a lot of miles on our legs and we still have some miles to go and we will just work on some fundamental stuff.”

A good time to come out and watch another Hawk Team that has a chance of finishing on top as this group of ladies will try to join that growing group of Hawks that can claim a District Championship.

Go Hawks!!
