Canyon Lake is tied with Wimberley for first place in district play after their Tuesday match with Llano and sweeping the Yellowjackets, 25-16, 25-12, and 25-21.

Liv Robinson is all smiles after beating the Llano Yellowjackets.

The Texans disposed of Fredericksburg and will set up a showdown across the Back-Bone this Friday for the 6:00pm first serve.

The Junior Varsity and Freshman both went 3 sets to tie up their district record after suffering losses to Boerne last week.

Olivia (Liv) Robinson helped with the rest of that JV crew to a run-a-way win after a first set loss.

“We struggle with our starts,” Head JV Coach Megan Helmey stated. “We will be changing up our warm-ups before our next game.”

This JV crew won their decisive set, 25-11 leaving no doubt that a better start would be a welcome sight for the Coaches.

“Our middles played a good game and once we started talking we had a better rhythm to finish this game,” Coach Helmey closed.

Robinson had several kills in that deciding set and helped in finishing off this Yellowjacket team.

“We weren’t coming together and we needed to communicate and Coach told us to talk more and come together,” Robinson said on their talk with Coach Helmey after that first set loss.

“That helped us to get points and rallies,” Robinson closed. On how this team has performed since the first of the season, Robinson quipped, “We have come together as a team since we first started and we keep learning to play our positions.”

            Way to Go Hawks!!

That was certainly the case on this night as the Junior Varsity and Freshman will be looking to continue their district schedule with a goal of finishing in first place.

For the Varsity, this Llano contest was a good test after seeing this Yellowjacket team take a set in their loss to Wimberley in their first district game.

Canyon Lake increased their lead throughout that first set. Riley Mickey and Caroline Kullberg were active at the net when Kayla Wunderlich started her serve with that first set all tied up at 5 points. A point differential with, 20-11 score, to finish that first win, 25-16.

Mickey (5) and Kullberg (3) kills led the attack to start this game.

“All of us had to get it together and realize our record did not matter when we started district,” Kullberg stated. Canyon Lake started District 28-4A with a losing record which was a first for CL since Coach Paisley started coaching the Hawks in 2013.

             Way to Go Hawks!!

That 2013 year, The Lake, was 18-13 when they started district but was soon out classed ending the season on a down note and a 1-9 record to end district play.

This season, a losing record and now setting with a, 2-0 record as district gets going.

The Hawks kept the pressure on in that 2nd set with a 13 point win as this contest was never in peril, 25-12. This final score was the largest lead realized as CL continued to force the action.

Llano was not going to quit and that 3rd set was the exact opposite of those first two and Canyon Lake found themselves down, 13-20.

“We just had to push through and we did really good in finishing,” Kullberg closed.

The odds of winning a set when a team reaches 20 points first is usually a deposit time for the bank. You can get the Brinks Truck if that lead balloons to a 7 point, 20-13 lead.

That was when Canyon Lake turned on the fire hose and outscored, Llano, 12-1 and finished with this sweep.

    Let’s Go Hawks!!

Mariah Haight and Mickey both had 5 point serves with help from Cassidy Felps with 3 kills, 2 consecutive aces on Mickey’s serve and an ending kill from Paige Bower.

“We flatted out and relaxed and got too comfortable,” Head Coach Kim Paisley deduced. “But we came back and focused to finish.”

Canyon Lake will now travel the Devil’s Back-Bone this Friday with the winner having an inside track in the first round of district play.

Wimberley has their Mojo back and will look to stop CL’s 7 game winning streak over the Texan’s and their sweep over the Billies will attest to how tough this game will be.

Go Hawks and Beat Wimberley!!!
