CLJV Punch Out Fredericksburg, 28-6

Derek Wiatrek and Anthony Brown had incredible plays in win over Freddie, 28-06.

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity rebounded for another solid win, beating Fredericksburg, 28-6 last Thursday night at the Hawk Nest and going 3-0 in district play.

          Way to Grill Hawks!!

This contest started with a solid blow to the midsection by the Visitors in taking the their first possession 63 yards and, 6-0 lead over CLJV.
The Billies JV converted 3 third down plays on the drive while taking off over 6 minutes off the clock.

“This game was a lot like two boxers going at it,” Head JV Coach Robert Soza said. “This is a very resilient team and our kids know that it takes 4 quarters and we are proud of them.”

The Lake responded with a lackluster and mistake prone drive that ended with an 18 yard punt. This drive had holding penalties that put CL without continuing a chance to get back into the game.

Freddie now had good field position to add to their lead starting on Canyon Lake’s 42 yard line.

The Billies would not capitalize in garnering 6 yards and running out of downs.

Canyon Lake was still getting their wings to work when Jesse Horner bulled over Billies on a 47 yard run and made the 13 yard line where Fredericksburg’s defense put up a Wall and CLJV would be stopped on their 16 yard line.

This contest had matured to the end of the 2nd Quarter and all indications had Fredericksburg ready to burst out while CL seemed to be playing with borrowed time in just being down by 6 points.

The CL Defense would start to take flight when they stopped the Billies and after a punt had your Hawks needing 40 yards for a chance to score. Up to this point, Canyon Lake, had amassed 69 yards and taking the Horner 47 yarder showed how anemic the performance had been.

             Way to Go Hawks!!

A Slot-T signature play will usually have a pass to help in opening up the game and Kolten Belcher found Horner open down the middle of the field and 28 yard pass and catch to the Freddie, 12 yard line.

Derek Wiatrek was next up and a counter up the middle tying the score at 6 all and 1:42 on the clock.

Fredericksburg still had time but CL’s defense started to get it together and an incredible interception by Defensive Lineman Anthony Brown fingertip catch on the 33 yard line and just :22 seconds on the clock.

“I saw the screen play coming and I just did what we routinely do in practice,” Brown said routinely. “It was all just instinct and I did not know that I had caught the ball.”

On how this game started, “They came out and punched us in the mouth and we were willing to punch back,” Brown finished the knock-out punch like a heavyweight.

That was certainly the case in this contest.

A Hawk run for no gain would set up a time-out and one last chance for a touchdown with 9 seconds before halftime and then a Belcher to Ryan Rivali catch to the 5 yard line and then a bruising run and touchdown leaving a second left and Hawk lead, 14-6.

              Way to Go Hawks!!

Two scores with both starting from the Billies, 40 yard line, had the Hawks in business with a chance to start their 2nd half on the offensive.

A 59 yard drive to start the next quarter had 4 plays that saw a different Hawk team capping off this drive when Devyn Placeres went around the end for 39 yards and a de-cleating block by Wiatrek helping spring this long run and score, 21-6 Hawks.

“I saw this guy coming to me and he thought I was looking high (for the block) and I went low just like we are suppose to,” Wiatrek said with resolve.

Another item that changed was which team was having the most infractions as CL had 50 yards of penalties and Fredericksburg would end the 2nd half with 7 penalties for 70 yards.

Those infractions helped in stopping any rhythm for the Billies as they continued to stall with each drive started.

Canyon Lake was not finished tho and took their next drive for another score covering 67 yards and watching Horner running over any Billie that tried to stop him on a 13 yard final nail in the ball score, 28-6.

A night and day game with Canyon Lake controlling the game after a staggering shot by Fredericksburg but another district win will go a long way into next week when the Hawks travel to Lampasas and a chance for another win.

                   Go Hawks!!

“It feels great being 3-0 in district,” Wiatrek stated. “We will continue to play hard and we are really excited to take these games and we will continue to execute.”

That was the game play, in going 4 quarters and keep plugging away in what turned out to be a dominating game.!!

Way to Go Hawks!!
