CL Hawks Basketball Starts their Season this Saturday
Rico Griffin, Anthony Zavala, and Sam Schimank prepare for the La Vernia Bears this Saturday.
Canyon Lake’s Boys Basketball will get going for real this Saturday at the Hawk Nest for an unusual start with the Sub-Varsity tipping off at 10am.

To prepare for this uncommon first game, the Hawks, worked on their game during their last scrimmage against Lockhart this past Tuesday.
The Lake has a lot of new wrinkles in their game this season with an up-tempo pace that should not be good for fans wanting to catch some shut-eye while attending.
There were 3 Hawks that finished with double digit scoring in the scrimmage while Head Coach Lucas Chapman substituting freely throughout in search of seeing how each player would respond.
Those 3 players were Rylee Spaulding (12), Anthony Zavala (11), and Sam Schimank (10) who worked on their game.
“This was our first game where we faced someone other than us,” Coach Chapman stated. “It is one thing in practice and much different in a game situation and early on we had to make some adjustments.”
On what his overall thoughts on this scrimmage, “We hot a little gassed but we have been working on this all Fall and we will need to work on our spacing and dishing off.”
That was one aspect during this night on how CL started in having 80% of those first baskets coming off of assists, which is a great sign, that showed communication for those easy baskets.

Junior Rico Griffin was one of those players that showed off with a good Basketball IQ, as he contributed with rebounds and steals.
On what he took from this last scrimmage before the start of the season and what will he will concentrate on before Saturday, “I will be working on my, on ball defense,” Griffin did not hesitate. “I am just trying to get better and I will also be working on crashing the board and moving to the ball.”
Griffin made his presence known playing as a newbie Sophomore and now will use that year of experience in helping The Lake strive for a chance of continuing a Hawk string of consecutive Play-Off games to four years.
Another Hawk that will have some huge shoes to fill in the paint will be Anthony Zavala and playing among some big trees in the paint seemed to be a welcomed challenge after scoring 11 points in this scrimmage.
“We will need to keep working on our rebounding and passing and getting to our spots,” Zavala said in response to what he felt bout how this game went and what he would work on.

On guarding those big men Zavala recalled, “I was just maintaining my place and staying in front of him one of those big guys).”
Canyon Lake will have a decent nucleus of players returning after losing some height from last year’s club, but that challenge can be compensated with that up-tempo strategy.
Sam Schimank was moved up for his Junior year but an injury kept him out of step for much of last season and he will be wanting to make up for some lost time.
On what he learned from this scrimmage, Schimank was quick with a response, “Learn how to handle a press and chemistry because we will have a lot of new players. We will just need to continue to play with each other and that will help as we get started for Saturday.”
Saturday would be a good time to come and enjoy a Hawk team that will still be missing some players that are still in the middle of football but based on this night, Canyon Lake looked ready to start another successful season.
