Canyon Lake’s Lady Basketball started their season on the road against San Antonio Brooks Academy last Tuesday and had little resistance in a blow out win, 67-6.

This year’s Hawk team has one difference from last season with a full roster of 10 players which was not an option with last year’s Varsity.

       Hit-Man says Go Hawks!!

“The score was 5-0 Brooks with 4:30 to go in the first quarter,” Head Coach Zach Burleson recounted. “We had to get in a rhythm and finally did. We got the ball moving and finally got it going.”

First games have been successful these last two years after CL took care of Brooks Academy, 71-43 to start last season.

“I thought our post did a good job of getting the ball out quick to the guards,” Coach Burleson said. “Our guards did a good job of finding open players and it led to some easy conversions.”

The Lake made that last statement by Coach Burleson a truism as the Hawks were able to amass the most assists in their history with 26 for the game.

Junior Marley Carrizales led that group with 8 in this contest with team-mate Lainee Moses next with 5 assists for the game. Those two guards combining with 13 which is many times a team total.

After those 5 points in the first half of that opening quarter, CL’s defense would allow just 1 more point to close out this battle.

“We have 5 players coming back from last year that have some experience together,” Burleson continued. “But, their roles have to be different than last year. We have some girls who have not played varsity yet and it will be good for them to get some experience and carve out their roles.”

Way to Plug Leaks, Go Hawks!

Canyon Lake did have some very valuable Seniors lost in last year’s record setting season and replacing those players will be a major goal for this pre-district time of year.

“Hoping to learn from what we can do better and improve,” Coach Burleson closed like all good coaches will do with having to improve and hence more hard work-outs.

After a great shooting and passing night, Canyon Lake, could work on their free throws for improvement after having a better shooting percentage with their 2 and 3 point shots.

CL Hawks will be back in action next Tuesday when Manor Tech comes to the Hawk Nest with a 5pm tip-off for this year’s Gold team and then the Varsity will start play approximately 6:30pm.

Go Hawks!!
