CL Hawks Triple Up Fox Tech, 64-20 for First Win

Rylee Spaulding has adapted well to Varsity status so far this season.

Canyon Lake takes care of Fox Tech for their first win, 64-20 last Monday morning.

             Let’s Go Hawks!!

The Hawks started slow again and have averaged right at 10 points to open each game thus far this year. Those next three quarters have been much more productive by averaging 18 points as each session has commenced.

“We’ve got to find a way to start faster,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “But it was good to get a feel good win…when everyone gets to play.”

This Fox Tech battle had the Hawks pitching a shut-out in that first stanza and the Techsters scored their first bucket with 4 minutes left before half-time. CL would be leading by 15 points when that score was made.

All but one Hawk got into the score book with Sam Schimank leading the pack with 13 points while pitching in by leading the team with 5 steals.

Jeremy Duncan had 11 points after sinking 3 shots beyond the arc in joining Schimank in double digit scoring.

Taking the first 3 games of the season since the Hawks started playing with a round-ball on the hard wood, has this team above the rest. CL’s 3rd year of varsity play is the only year that comes close to this campaign.

                   Year Points Average
                   2009 118 39.3
                   2010 189 63.0
                   2011 129 43.0
                   2012 134 44.7
                   2013 146 48.7
                   2014 119 39.7
                   2015 143 47.7
                   2016 177 59.0
                   2017 132 44.0
                   2018 198 66.0

Improving the free throw shooting will come in handy for this year and with a 73% on this night.

A decent 42% from two point territory to go with a much better 30% from beyond the arc on this night would translate to a 44 point blow out.

Hill Country Furnishings says Go Hawks

              Congrats Hawks!!

Basketball is a game with so many moving parts that a game will have players with out the best stats playing the best game on any given night.

Rylee Spauding fits that motif as this Junior has shot a sparkling, 9 out of 10 from the floor to open the first three contests. Spauding scored 6 points in limited action in this win but did have an highlight that excited the crowd with a rebound that was dribbled down the court with a reverse lay-up.

“I was just in the moment,” Spaulding stated. “I just blacked out but saw a hand coming to block my shot so I took the ball back and reversed my shot on the other side of the rim.”

Spaulding continued, “That play was 70% muscle memory and 30% mental.”

On what he looks to do as this season matures, “As a post player I have to use what I’ve got and I am trying to get offensive rebounds and working on passing the ball.”

Guard Jeremy Duncan was a shot in the arm and basket in Hawk Win.

Guard, Jeremy Duncan, came up big in this game ending with 11 points on 67% shooting from the field. Duncan is a speedster and took advantage of Fox Tech’s defense in breaking their defense down and getting 4 assists to go with his scoring.

“We need to wake up more and get it and go,” Duncan said in responding to the slow starts through the first three outings. “I need to work on being more efficient with the ball when I am running the play.”

CL’s defense was evident as many of the Hawk points came off of their 15 steals,

“Defense translates to offense,” Duncan closed with a lay-up.

Canyon Lake will be back in action after the Thanksgiving break when the welcome Brooks Academy to the Hawk Nest next Tuesday when the Junior Varsity tips off at 5:00pm.
