Wimberley is Good!! They Win, 50-14 over Canyon Lake
Canyon Lake took it’s first loss of the year as Wimberley Texans brought their ‘A’

game to the Hawks and lapped the home team in grand fashion, 50-14 in a meeting between two undefeated District 26-3A foes.
“We’re not there yet,” Head Coach Matt Monzingo said. “This team (Wimberley) is strong, big and very balanced.”
“When they stopped Zach (Henshaw), we weren’t as tough as we needed to be,” Coach Monzingo reflected.
Wimberley seemed like they were in the Hawk’s huddle as they had four defensive backs ready when the Hawks tried a play that worked earlier this year against Luling. The first play action pass that scored on Luling was an interception against Wimberley.
The Texans were ready to start their onslaught. One play later the score was 6-0 after a 59 yard pass play with only 29 seconds off the clock.
The Hawks did have a 71 yard 12 play drive, on their third possession of the game. A Zach Henshaw nine yard run happened with only three seconds left on the first quarter clock.
The 12-7 score would be the closest the home team would get for the rest of the night.
Have we mentioned that Wimberley is good yet?
Wimberley scored the first four times they had the ball. The number of plays for those scores? 15 plays…
To recap: It took Canyon Lake 12 plays to score one touchdown…it took the Texans 15 plays to score four touchdowns.
Running Back Zach Henshaw earned every yard he advanced, the problem? He only could get minimum wage for his troubles. Henshaw averaged a little over three yards per tote.
For the year Henshaw was averaging eight yards, this game was almost five yards less.
“Wimberley is a great football team,” Henshaw admonished. “It was not our night, we shot ourselves in the foot…we’ve got to learn from the game and this will make us a stronger football team.”
Hawk Defense readies for a Big Play
The last chance for a Hawk comeback was thwarted at the end of the second quarter.
Canyon Lake had driven 80 yards in less than two minutes and found themselves with a first down on the seven yard line.
A muffed snap resulted in a three yard loss on first down…a sack and loss of 11 yards on second down…and two incomplete passes leaving no time on the clock and the Hawks on the short end of a 26-7 halftime score.
“We felt that we needed the touchdown on that series before the half,” Coach Monzingo reasoned. “Wimberley is good.”
Turnovers have been the main problem for CL in the series against the Texans.
The Hawks did not disappoint in that part of the game, as the team turned the ball over four times.
Canyon Lake had just six turnovers the whole season and in the game against Sealy, no mistakes.
While commenting on the game, Offensive lineman Jaaz McNair was brief, “They have a good line.”
The second and final score for Canyon Lake came about after three interceptions in a row in the third quarter between the two schools.
Matt Noyola had both interceptions for CL and a lot of help from the defensive line on the last interception, when they pegged Brady Lambert leaving the ball fluttering into Noyola’s waiting hands.
It took the Hawks six plays to go 17 yards, with a beautiful end zone pass to Quinn Pike on a fourth down play from six yards out.
The play happened with eleven seconds on the third quarter clock and CL down 33-14.

Wimberley controlled the clock and added 17 more points in the fourth quarter as the Hawks who had controlled opponents this year with their stamina were being taught a lesson from their neighbors to the North.
Wimberley controlled the yardage by out gaining the Hawks with over 200 yards.
Wimberley is Good!
The game would remind you of the proverbial snowball going down hill. Wimberley made the hill look like a Mountain.
“Wimberley is a good team,” Senior Defensive End Alex Kemp said. “We’ve got to learn to come out ready…we will get the temper out of us and get ready for a new team.”
Coach Chuck Wallen put a good capsule on the events for the evening.
“We can’t make any mistakes,” Coach Chuck Wallen interjected. “They were big and fast…they were the best we have seen this year. Wimberley is formidable and they are a good team.”
Has the ReSporter mentioned that the Texans are a good team?
“We will regroup and stay positive and coach our kids up,” Wallen closed. “We will put this game behind us.”
Canyon Lake had a bump in their season, Coach Monzingo said it last week, “The next games after Wimberley are the ones that will define our season.”
Yes!! A good season by another good team so far.
