Canyon Lake finished this past week after 6 games and 5 of those contests coming at the Canyon Lake Classic Tournament.

               Let’s Go Hawks!!

Randolph edged out Lockhart for first place in this round-robin set of battles.

The Hawks had another 50-50 week by beating Gonzales on Tuesday that was followed with wins over Weiss and Somerset during tourney time.

That win over Somerset was a good barometer game after suffering an earlier loss at the start of this year’s games. At this point CL is close to the midway point of the season and having an idea of how this group of players are stacking up against previous teams, The ReSporter, has some numbers for digesting.

An uptempo game has resulted to more points and based on the decrease of blocks per game, gives the fans, a reason for changing the type of floor game being played.

              Way to Go Hawks!!

In that Somerset game, Canyon Lake improved on the defensive side of their game in helping flip that earlier loss that was played in last week’s Marion Tournament.

Sam Schimank led Canyon Lake scoring 13 points followed by Zac (Rico) Griffin with 10. There has not been many contests that has had both Schimank and Parker Mott with good shooting beyond the arc.

The Hawks have so many players that are interchangeable with their skill sets which will play to their advantage as this season continues toward District 28-4A time of year.

Rico Griffin continues his strong play while contributing in several facets of play on the hard-court.

In CL’s win over Weiss, Griffin and Schimank came up big in those waning minutes that had both players having instrumental parts of their game in helping turn a loss into happy a happy-locker room.

“We were able to work on our zone, which was good,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated in response in helping keep the team fresh. “We had played 5 games in 3 days and did not get home until midnight after our game in Gonzales.”

The Weiss Wolves clamped down on The Lake with a suffocating defense that had your host able to score 13 points in those two middle quarters. That defense turned a Canyon Lake 9 point lead to, 29-28 lead going into the final 8 minutes of regulation.

           Way to Go Hawks!!

CL forged back into the lead with a Parker Mott 3 pointer followed by Griffin’s ‘old fashion’ 3 point play after scoring and being fouled. Those two plays put Canyon Lake up, 34-31 with still 5:18 left in regulation.

Griffin was responsible for an assist to Mott’s 3-pointer and then keeping that one possession lead with 4:30 left in that final period, 36-33.

Weiss responded with 2 points from their charity stripe and another jumper that would give the Wolves their 2nd lead of the game, 37-36. And with a little over a minute remaining, another Weiss field goal would result in their largest lead, 39-36.

“We were having to pressure fo force the issue,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman recalled about the end of that Weiss game. “We were lucky to keep it to a one possession game and then they made mistakes and we took advantage of their mistakes.”

Weiss would have a 3 point lead and the ball after another Hawk miss with 34 seconds left in this battle.

That lead would continue as both teams would shoot blanks down the stretch and with :31 seconds to go Schimank would find nothing but net on two free throws drawing CL to a one point deficit, 39-38.

Canyon Lake’s inbound defense would play havoc on the Wolves and with 17 seconds remaining, Griffin would force a steal and a blind throw towards CL’s basket to a waiting Schimank for a lay-in and Hawk lead, 40-39 with 14 seconds on the clock.

             Way to Go Hawks!!

“Coach was yelling, ‘Hot’,” Griffin recalled and then letting The ReSporter know that, Hot, meant to foul the ball carrier. “Before I was going to foul, I felt like I had one more chance to swipe at the ball because he (the Wolf player with the ball) was dribbling the ball on the outside. I was able to hit the ball and just save the ball before it would go out of bounds.”

On did he knew that Schimank was near the basket, “No, I just threw it back in and was lucky that Sam was there to get it.”

Schimank recounts, “I saw Rico dive for the ball and keep it in bounds and I was lucky to be the only person there.”

After a Weiss miss, another foul against Schimank would give the Hawks the final score and win, 42-39.

Every 4th Quarter bucket would have a Griffin assist or bucket, as this Junior would score 5 points with two offensive rebounds along with 2 assists and 3 steals.

Schimank responded to what this Hawk team will do as they get closer to district completion, “We will need to think about our practices and go through a routine and just think practice.”

This was in response to having 6 games in a week that there was no time for practicing as they will when district play begins and having time to go over strengths and weaknesses of those schools.

Go Hawks!!
