Lady Hawks Finished in 2nd Place in New Braunfels Christian Tourney

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks finished in 2nd Place at the New Braunfels Christian Tournament this past weekend.

The Hawks went 3-1 with their only defeat at the hands of FEAST in this round-robin tourney of games.
“We did some good things and we played hard,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said after the Hawks last win of the night when they beat the Host Team, 46-29. “We still have a lot of things to do and we have to start connecting and get from standing to getting pressure….these are just growing pains.”
Canyon Lake is having to replace a very good group of Seniors from last season and meshing the first year Varsity players with this year’s Juniors continues to be a focus point as district play will be here before you know it.
NB Christian’s zone defense was able to leave Caroline Kullberg with some wide open shots from the free throw line that allowed the Hawks to start this contest with a 7 point lead that was extended in each subsequent quarter, 46-29.
Kullberg finished the contest with.a game high 13 points while sinking 6 shots and teaming with Jesse Melendez for a combined 15 rebounds in controlling the paint on both sides of the court.
Another 2 blocks which has this shot-blocker within arms length of that All-Time Record held by Amber Ramsey.

“This game was a little rough at first and then I would just drive (to the basket) if they came to me,” Kullberg said with eloquence as she commented on being open on so many occasions but starting the contest a little cold with her shot. “I would get the ball and nobody was there.”

On how Kullberg approaches the game with her approach in blocking so many shots, “I do want to get blocks but I have to be easy sometimes with fouls….but I keep my hands straight, but the last part of the game I had to back off and just contested their shots.”
It paid off as Canyon Lake continued to keep teams below that 40 point threshold.
Sophia Barber scored 9 points as her off-guard play continues to improve with some offensive rebounds in the win.
Chelsea Tschoepe was active with 21 tournament rebounds to go along with shooting 72% from the free throw line sinking 10 for the tournament and 5 in this win over the Wildcats.
The Lake has a deeper squad this year and some of those players are playing after seeing several games from the stands these past few years.
Kaitlyn Cox and Cassidy Felps are two Hawks that fit that description.
“I have to stay in the game since I go into the game on random times,” Felps said when responding to how she approaches the game after a long absent to the hard-wood. “I will usually get into the game when players get into foul trouble and I am starting to understand the plays and I am now getting more comfortable.”

That was the case on this night as Felps made her presence with a 4 point outing and sinking two free throws that found nothing but net. On if she was having a good time, Felps was short with a, “Yeah!”
Canyon Lake is just 5 games away from reaching a .500 mark with their record (138-143). The Hawks have two other teams that have reached that plateaux as CL’s Volleyball and Softball are presently in that position.
CL’s Football team had reached that mark this season before losing their final 4 games sending them back to the other side.
The Hawk Ladies will be sharing the Gym this Tuesday with the Boy’s team. A good time to come out and cheer on our Go Hawks!!
