CL Hawks Answer Lampasas in Win, 61-57
Canyon Lake was victorious in their last game before the Christmas break that will have your Hawks back in action in a Fredericksburg tournament on December 27th.
Starting this game with a 73% shooting percentage in the opening period was impressive as CL ran up a lead of 8 points, 13-5, after a Trent MacRoberts 3 pointer and a 7 point Hawk lead after that first quarter of play, 21-14.
The Lake was able to get that lead to 10 points in the second period, 26-16 with 5 minutes left before halftime.
Lampasas was able to cut that lead down to 3 points after a 7 point run, 26-23, with still over 3 minutes to go. The Hawks responded by finishing the 2nd quarter outscoring their visitors, 8-2 going into the half-way mark leading, 34-25.
Those two first periods had an efficient Hawk squad with 8 different players getting into the scoring column.
“Parker (Mott), Sam (Schimank), and Jeremy (Duncan) did a great job of controlling the tempo and they attacked and made plays,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said.
Those 3 players had half of CL’s assists as they broke down the Badgers man full court pressure.
Schimank (15) and Trent MacRoberts (12) finished ahead in team scoring after Schimank filled out each stat column finishing with 3 steals one assist and soundly rejecting a Badger shot.
“Sam doesn’t get rattled against pressure,” Coach Chapman assessed. “He is Mr. Cool.”
Well Mr. Cool had some extra attention after scoring 9 of his 15 points in the opening quarter.
“We are always trying to be aggressive and we play better in our transition game,” Schimank said when commenting on how this battle played out. “I went by him (the Lampasas player that upped his defensive effort starting that 2nd quarter) a few times, but it’s always fun playing competitive and getting rebounds and scoring.”
The Hawks have lost games like this contest in trying to get back in a game but never getting over that hump. In CL’s last contest that was a loss was exactly the same type of pain that was used in this win.
Canyon Lake was never trailing and started the game with a 3 pointer from Mott that was followed by a quick score by the Badgers. Then a Zac (Rico) Griffin shot followed by a nice drive and score for Schimank that was followed by a free throw and another make was the type of pressure applied throughout this battle.
After Lampasas closed the gap with a 3 pointer, then Trent MacRoberts matched that helping stretch the lead back to an 8 points, 13-5.
In that 2nd stanza, LHS cut the Hawk lead to 3 points, 26-23 when CL answered with buckets by Schimank, Luke Mendez, and Griffin.
That 9 point lead was shaved back to 3 points at the end of the 3rd quarter as the Badgers staged their own slew of points closing a 47-39 lead down 5 points in the last 20 seconds of action.
Enter the answer to start the last 8 minutes on another MacRoberts 3 pointer followed by a nice play in the paint by Rylee Spaulding to get that distance needed to end this game.
Spaulding was being fronted and pin-point passing by Mott on two consecutive trips down the court helped balloon the lead to 8 points with 3 minutes remaining.
“I wasn’t expecting that play as we had called it off but when we executed it was just like practice,” Rylee commented. “When we play like this, it pushes all the focus to the elbow or wing.”
Mott is more than just a scorer as those passes to the paint had to be exact based on that type of man-to-man defense, “My goal is trying to get it going…he (Spaulding) is easy to find and he made the layups.”
The Hawks started a different type of offense to end this game, “We were trying to isolate or spread it out and see if Parker could make a play,” Coach Chapman quipped.
Canyon Lake goes into their Christmas Break all even (8-8) and will look to capitalize on those good aspects that were realized in this game.
Merry Christmas and Go Hawks!!
