Lady Hawks Keep 1st Place Status in Win over Texans, 36-29

CL Lady Hawks came back in a must win over Wimberley on Tuesday at the Hawk Nest, 36-29.

Caroline Kullberg swats 4 basketball shots & scores 11 points in Wimberley win.

The win kept pace with Fredericksburg in the District 28-4A race after disposing Boerne in putting these same two schools in position for a strong run to the top.

Canyon Lake had a dismal shooting (23%) night from the floor with only one player (Caroline Kullberg) able to approach a decent percentage finishing with 11 points in this win.

The Lake was down 5 points after the first period and would have a lot of work to realize a victory going into those last 3 quarters to right the ship.

“We talked about not giving up second chance points,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said in response on what his conversation with the team was after that first quarter of play. “They hurt us with that early and we did a better job after the first quarter.”

On the poor shooting night, “We were getting good looks but we didn’t hit much and so we just kept doing what we do….it was a tough night shooting wise and we did a better job limiting how many rebounds they get.”

Canyon Lake has continued a strong year defensively and that came into play after allowing 6 points per quarter or 17 points for the rest of this night.

“We got some steals and pushed it a little more to get some fast break looks,” Coach Burleson closed. “We have to continue to improve on rebounding and pushing the fast break at appropriate times.”

        Way to Beat Wimberley!!

Kullberg’s 11 points topped the Hawks and with 4 blocks, this Junior Shot Blocker is now tops after passing Amber Ramsey’s All-Time Record of 122 during her career. That is significant as Kullberg’s 123 blocks is in her 2nd year and Ramsey amassed her total playing for 3 years in the Hawk Green.

Chelsea Tschoepe and Jesse Melendez both finished with 11 rebounds in helping CL to control the boards after that first period.

Shot wise, it would be the free throws that would open the door for this win as the Hawks entered the last stanza down one point, 23-22. A 14 point break out in that last quarter helped fortify the lead and win over the Texans.

This victory put Canyon Lake in the plus column in all time wins, 146-145 and they now join the Volleyball and Softball teams on that family tree of Hawk Sports.

CL will take a road trip to Llano and Fredericksburg for their next two games as they continue their first round of games.

Go Hawks!!
