Canyon Lake Boy’s JV Basketball, Future looks Bright

The ReSporter has been able to record 5 games thus far in regards to this season’s Boy’s Junior Varsity Basketball team.

           Way to Go JV Hawks!!

All of those contests were wins and this group of players are supplying some evidence for seeing how CL’s Basketball might have some lethal weapons in the coming years.

The players below have a well balanced team with some good ball handlers as well as some height for those players needed in the paint for defense and chances with buckets around the basket.

Patrick McAuliffe started the season on varsity but quickly moved down to play JV after an influx of football players that filled more varsity spots.

McAuliffe has embraced his role as this has allowed much more playing time and a chance to work on different aspects of his game. In playing 4 games in the box score below, an average of 20 points per game speaks for itself.

Pearse McCullagh and Tyler Pauly are interchangeable guards with no drop off when substitutions are made. McCullagh is averaging over 12 points per contest with the best shooting percentage beyond the 3-point line (42%) and for a guard having a respectable 48% shooting percentage.

Pauly is proving to be a good quarterback by taking care of the ball and distributing the ball in those right spots for scores.

Kyle Morris has come on in his past few games with an ability in securing steals. This is another player that comes off the bench with no drop-off from a starter.

         Be the Best JV Hawks!!

As you can tell, this might be the deepest Junior Varsity that Canyon Lake has suited up. There has been other JV teams that showed fire-power and defense, but this year’s crew has several players on the bench who can give Coach Javier Almanza plenty of options.

Having a deep bench will help in the flow of a game as opposing JV teams are not able to keep up with that type of continued pressure.

Tuff Cantu and Caleb Shimank keeps adding to that deep guard play with Colton Winters being good enough as starter for previous JV teams if born during a different time.

Matt Taliaferro is the true tall man in this line-up and is averaging 2 blocks per contest and 8 rebounds.

Then you have a Peyton McMullen who can handle the ball while having a great leaping ability to play post or relieve with that center role.

          Way to Go JV Hawks!!

Dawson Piela has played limited time as some braun in the paint, with some good numbers, which is like most of the players on this Hawk team.

Unfortunately basketball only allows 5 players on a court at the same time which reduces time on the court.

Canyon Lake will be starting district play on Friday against Llano and this will give an indication, on just how good this group of players will be in the future.

Time will tell and Go Hawks!!
