CL’s Baseball Beat SA Lanier in Opening Contest in Hondo Tourney, 7-0

Canyon Lake wins first game in the Devine/Hondo Tournament over SA Lanier, 7-0 to improve the Hawks record to 4-1 for this young season.

Hawks run record to 4-1 after win over SA Lanier.

Matt Anderson took the ball and threw a 2 hitter and was relieved by James LaLonde for this win.

“Matt is a control pitcher and he did his job on the mound,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla said. “We pressed early and did a few things that hurt us. We have to learn to make adjustments at the plate if we want to beat good teams.”

Lanier did not advance any runner past first base with Dalton Stanley throwing 2 Lanier players out trying to steal a base. That would leave the Kings with just 2 runners left on base as CL kept those bags clean on this day.

CL would score their first run, which would be enough for a win, in their 3rd inning when Caleb Williams started off with a double to left field and would advance to 3rd on a steal.

After a Mason Lee ground out, Brandon Robinson would single that would score Williams and the lead, 1-0.

As Anderson controlled the mound, the Hawks would blow the game open scoring 6 runs in the 5th inning which would also drain the Tournament Game Clock that helped seal this opening tourney win.

Michael Claycomb and Matt Anderson both opened with walks that was followed by a single off the bat of James LaLonde that scored Kolten Ramey who was running for Claycomb.

Ethan Slater singled to load the bases but on Williams single Jeremy Greene was called out at home plate keeping the score still in doubt with CL up, 2-0.

                   Way to GO HAWKS!!

Lee would single to left field that scored more insurance runs for the Hawks, 3-0.

With the bases still loaded, Tyler Pauly would put this battle away on a triple to left field and a Hawk, 7-0 advantage and what would be the final score.

LaLonde finished up the pitching with a 3 up and 3 down 5th inning that will now have the Hawks coming back for more tomorrow with 2 games on the docket.

How those games play out will let CL know what game they will be seeded on Saturday, which was just like last week’s tournament in Marion.

“We will work to eliminate those mistakes,” Coach Escamilla closed. “It’s a ‘W’ and we will keep it!”

W’s have been an elusive letter for some time at the Hawk Nest so keeping it would not be something needed to talk about for keeping it.

The Lake will start early on Friday with the first pitch at 12:30pm against Dilley and then a 6:30pm start with one of the host teams, Hondo.

Go Hawks!!
