Canyon Lake Boys Soccer beat Fredericksburg, with 5 unanswered goals after spotting the Billies to a, 1-0 lead before closing with a blitz and a win, 5-1, to clinch a 2nd seed for the Post-Season.

                 Make a Legacy!!
                    Go Hawks!!

Finishing in 2nd place is a first for the Hawks as they will start their post-season contest against Lampasas next Friday. The ReSporter will have the venue after a coin flip between Dripping Springs and Marble Falls later this week.

This was the first sweep against Fredericksburg in district play and this win gave, The Lake, their first winning district record since play began in 2009. During the last two campaigns the Hawks finished district play with .500 records and the best district record before that was a 1-5-1 record in 2016.

It has been a rise in getting respect since that 2016 year when Coach Graham was in the building stages of having some better results, which up to this point, would not have taken much to accomplish.

In 2016, Canyon Lake garnered 8 wins and in during the last three years has had CL being seen with double digit numbers in their win column.

A rise from a 2013 year that had the Hawks scoring just 3 goals and finishing without a win in 15 games. It took CL seven years to add up to those 5 District 28-4A wins for this year’s team.

Canyon Lake hit a high water mark in 2017 when that squad made it to the sweet 16 in McAllen and finished 10 games over .500 (17-7-2). Another run like that with this year’s team would put this group in a different orbit as both teams have seen some significant gains on their Soccer Resume.

One of the main differences is seeing how well the defense has played. That was seen after your Hawks spotted Fredericksburg their one and only goal in that first half of play before the gates were opened for the Hawks final score, 5-1.

           Proud of These Hawks!!

Josh Sczech led the charge in scoring 2 goals while he was joined with Jorge De Leon, Trenton Lorett, and Aaron Almon each with 1 goal in this whitewash victory.

Goalkeeper Brayden Damico was part of that 2016 season as a Sophomore and now, as a Senior, has a chance to keep this Hawk train in gear. Canyon Lake has just finished their 3rd consecutive year of scoring more goals than what was allowed.

The tale of this tape has the 2016 team scoring 74 goals and giving up 48 and that can be contrasted with not as many goals but having a much stingier defense. So far, this defense has given up just 24 goals while scoring 57.

On giving up that one goal to the Billies, “That one goal we gave up was on me,” Head Soccer Coach Ryan Tierney said bluntly. “We had been working on a different defense and I had our players with that 4-3-2-1 defense instead of our basic, 4-4-2.”

“We did not stay in that defense much longer because that was giving them (Freddie) more opportunities,” Coach Tierney continued. “They had some deep sweepers and we have had issues with that.”

Canyon Lake has finished another regular season and will now be enjoying their 4th play-off in a row that has a decent results, sporting the following results with a, 2-3 post season record.

“We are changing our expectations and we want to keep it going,” Coach Tierney talked about where this program is as next year will have a different look with 13 Seniors playing their last games and finishing with their last home contest with a, record 7-3 at home this year an 18-7-4 record for their last 3 seasons. “We have been blessed with players and we still have a lot of work to do but we are making strides.”

              Way to Go Hawks!!

That is certainly an understatement with the success this Senior class has enjoyed while playing for Canyon Lake these past few years.

On what the team was thinking after Fredericksburg got that first goal, “Our moral dropped a little bit, but this was our last game (for the Seniors) and we just wanted to get it back and play like the score was still, 0-0,” Mason James remembered. “This is the best we have done in district and we are ready for the playoffs and our goals is to be the best we can be and leave a legacy.”

Fredericksburg was starting to get testy as the game continued and the proverbial, you are about to lose, syndrome entered into the fray. That had this Billie team not playing as clean of a game which had one player red carded and ejected after a cheap shot on Josh Sczech.

“It felt good when they started getting mad,” James said. “When they got mad, they quit working as a team.”

Matt Bell and Mason James taking in a Big Win over Billies in last home game.

Another Senior, Matt Bell also commented on this after going down by a, 1-0 score, “They were destroying our possessions and personally when they scored the first goal, I knew we were going to go off on them. We played perfect team ball and we just kept our heads in the game.”

Bell continued in talking bout the season, “This game meant a lot because this was the best we have ever been….We played a very good 5A team in Austin McCallum and we believed we can beat anyone if we play to our potential.”

Canyon Lake Soccer is forging ahead and will be back in action on Friday and stay tuned to The Hilltop ReSporter for more details.

Way to Go Hawks!!
