Canyon Lake had another heart-breaker on Thursday in taking on the District 28-4A leader, Llano to the end in suffering a loss, 3-0 and setting up a Billie/Hawk battle for a play-off spot next Tuesday.

Pitcher Tyler Pauly was on for all but one inning which had Llano getting 3 of their 4 total hits in that frame scoring 2 runs and taking this game.

Tyler Pauly comes up short in pitching gem against Llano.

Pauly had no walks and hit two Yellowjackets while striking out 8 and that was all the damage this front running club could muster, but on this night, it was all they needed.

“He (Pauly) throws a lot of strikes and he just loves the game,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla commented. “When he is on, we have to get him more support when he is pitching.”

“Staying in my routine and hitting my spots had me doing ok,” Pauly said.

On what CL needs to do now entering their last two contests, “It will be all bout our practices and once we are in a hole we have to fight back….we need to score early and I think we can do it….we did it once and we can do it again.”

Llano’s pitcher held the Hawks to 3 hits and struck out 9 while getting help with a double play and two Hawk’s caught stealing that helped keep the bases clean.

Sophomore Pauly had one of those hits in the 7th inning which now has his hitting streak up to 6 games and a .519 district batting average. For the season a decent .382 average has this Hawk working on reaching for a Canyon Lake record when all the dust settles.

Canyon Lake will need to get more production from their offense in hopes of repeating the first round of district games and two more wins. That would have the Hawks making the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row.

Simple way of calculating this puzzle is win the last two games. Canyon Lake did that during the first round and that will make Tuesday’s game with Freddie, the contest that will go a long way in crowning, the 4th seeded team.

Let’s Go Hawks!!  Beat the Billies!

Looking at the Billies, having their last game with Llano and that would give an advantage for CL. The Lake has a date with a last place Bulldog foe and that would have a better opportunity for a win compared to being matched up against the Yellowjackets.

So, with a loss to Fredericksburg on Tuesday, would put that last battle with Bandera as a must win while the scoreboard watching would be take place in finding out that final outcome of Freddie’s game with Llano.

A loss for the Billies and win for CL would have both teams having a play-in game for a final seed for the post-season. This would be the same scenario for both teams if the Hawks beat Freddie on Tuesday. A loss to Bandera and win for the Billies results in a tie and play-in game.

Fredericksburg and Canyon Lake both have to take care of business and the team that can win both would be an automatic.

Coach Escamilla talked about what Canyon Lake will be doing going into that Freddie battle, “It’s all about getting better….It is all out for Tuesday and we cannot hold anything back. Monday will be a long day in practice because of the Easter break which will cost a bit….but we will lay it on the line.”

Go Hawks!!
