Coaches Corner with Volleyball’s Kim (Paisley) Clemons
The ReSporter: You are in new ground for length of stay at one school, what has been your likes for being The Hawks Volleyball Coach?
Coach Clemons: “I really appreciate the opportunity (6 years ago) to come in and set a standard and philosophy for the Hawk Volleyball program and Girls Athletics as a whole. Comal ISD and specifically Canyon Lake High School, is a GREAT place to work and be a part of! I am truly blessed and I tell everyone how proud I am to be a part of such an AMAZING school district! We have something special here at the lake and in Comal ISD that I know other school districts have a hard time matching up with! The opportunities for growth as a teacher and coach are limitless, and they truly care about us and our performances, so that they will provide as many tools as possible for us to be successful. I am PROUD to begin my 7th year at Canyon Lake High School.”
The ReSporter: The Hawks had a disappointing season last year in finishing with a losing record. What do you see with this upcoming year of competition that gives you hope this campaign might turn out better?
Coach Clemons: “It is always disappointing to a coach to have a losing record, but in hindsight, given the struggles we occurred last season, we were able to fight and push through our consistent 2 rounds in playoffs. However, this is still not okay with us, and we will be better prepared this season physically and mentally. We will be young this year, but the thirst for greatness and competition is growing and I am excited to see the growth and strengths of these developing players this season and seasons to come.”
The ReSporter: How do you achieve ‘consistency’? That has been one of your mantra’s throughout your stay at Canyon Lake.
Coach Clemons: “We have a system in place for our program that gives the girls a sense of stability. They know the expectations and standards are held high and respect the legacy of the program. Keeping a consistency throughout your program makes it a well oiled machine. Another consistency factor that plays in to our system, is FUNDAMENTALS. Breaking down and rebuilding the fundamentals!”
The ReSporter: What are some of those measuring sticks you look for that gives you an idea that this year’s team might have that, ‘it’, factor?
Coach Clemons: “Our players are very diverse and strong overall. We have a variety of players that can play multiple positions on the front row and back row. This years group is hungry and excited to come out and set the tone for this 2019 season! They are driven and we can’t wait to see where they take us!”
The ReSporter: CL’s Volleyball team was the first to garner a District Championship. There has been some pressure coming from other Hawk Sports since that banner year in matching that achievement….what are some of your goals as this year unfolds?
Coach Clemons: “We are proud of our fellow Hawk Programs and the success that has ignited across our athletic programs. Our goals overall are to finish top in the district, and go 3 rounds and BEYOND in the playoffs. We as a coaching staff have reviewed and drafted more goals for the entire program from 6th grade Pre-Athletics to Varsity level volleyball. We are excited for the growth of our future hawk volleyball players.”
The ReSporter: What would be something the Hawk Nation will see when the nets are put up for the start of this season?
Coach Clemons: “ENERGY! INTENSITY! FIRE! We look forward to seeing you all this season!”
The ReSporter: Thanks Coach, take them one game at a time and Go Hawks!!
