Boy’s Basketball: Cedar Ridge beats Canyon Lake, 50-44

Canyon Lake (1-1) lost a tough game to Cedar Ridge last Friday at the Hawk Gym, 50-44.

The Hawks had to dig themselves out of a hole as they closed out the first quarter down by eight points. The game started tight with both teams not able to break loose as they were tied six all halfway through the quarter.

Cedar Ridge got separation after making a three pointer and increasing the lead to the end of the stanza.

Canyon Lake was finding it hard scoring points while shooting 30 percent in the quarter.

“We addressed that the shooting will be an issue initially,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard started.

If not for free throws, the Hawks would of been in even more hurt.

Free throws were the catalyst in the second quarter as those points help forge a three point lead going into intermission.

Defense was the hero in the comeback quarter as CL held the athletic Ridge group to just five points in the quarter.

The see/saw went back in favor of Cedar Ridge starting the second half, but Canyon Lake never let the lead get any separation.

The Hawks were lead by Senior Matt Magness with 18 points. In the second quarter, Magness decided to help the team anyway possible by stepping up to the free throw line even though he was 20 feet from the foul.

“We (Canyon Lake) are sneaky people,” the sly Magness said.

Cook was the player fouled in the lane while Magness was outside the three point line.

After the referee called the foul on Cedar Ridge, Magness (with the encouragement of Cook) walked up to the free throw line to bring the team closer.

When asked if he objected to the circumstance, Cook surmised, “We needed a shooter and I was in a slump, so I did not mind Magness stepping in.”

Being down 22-14 in the middle of the second quarter, the Hawks responded by not allowing any more points for the visitors and reeling off 11 unanswered points and the lead.

“Our shot selection was good,” Head Coach Maynard said. “I’m not much for moral victories, but this was a team that we knew was going to be a challenge.”

“For us to hold them to 50 points was a great accomplishment,” Coach Maynard closed.
