Lady Hawks Win Tug-of War Over Johnson City in 5 Sets
Canyon Lake’s Volleyball Team beat Johnson City in a 5 set match after a back and forth battle that had Megan Vorhis leading CL with 14 kills and 6 blocks.
The Hawks came out firing in that first set after trailing early (1-2) before taking flight and scoring their largest lead with 5 points while Taylor Fillinger was serving for a win, 25-16.
Caroline Kullberg was the main catalyst with 6 kills as all the Hawks were playing a near flawless start with just 6 unforced errors. Lainee Moses had enough digs to hit oil in West Texas and the Hawks were covering the floor on defense.
Kullberg seemed to have a more powerful swing on this night, “Yeah, I have been watching film on myself and saw that I needed to extend my arm more on my hits.”
On the team’s thought on a 5th set, “We figured we had gone this far and that we might as well finish it. We had to work the ball around and shake it (the mistakes) off and get the ball down…This was really an intense game but it was fun.”
Having fun is usually based on winning most of the time.
The Lake was well on their way to another carbon copy set again, with a 12-5 lead in that 2nd set before the Eagles decided to get into the game while outscoring Canyon Lake, 19-8 tying up the match, 20-25.
In that 3rd set, Canyon Lake had their way running out to an insurmountable 11 point lead, 23-12 before coasting to another, 25-16 finish.
“We had to switch,” Head Coach Kim Clemons stated after responding to changing up the rotation after that first set loss. “We were getting killed and I noticed that the wind was blowing on that side of the court….so we talked about not hitting our serve as hard and during the game we started picking up the middle and mixing it up.”
But the bottom would fall out again with an Eagle rally to tie up the match at 2 games a piece. JC dominated the Hawks and would send this night to a 5th set after never trailing, 25-17.
It had been 58 games since Canyon Lake was in a 5 set match. Try the Liberty Hill game to start last season in a Hawk win.
Johnson City was able to get a couple of 2 point leads in that final set with JC’s last lead at, 5-3 before Kayla Wunderlich helped spur CL to a lead that would never be succumbed after an exchange where Olivia Robinson’s ace and a pair of kills from Vorhis and Kullberg with an added block by Vorhis (6 for the game) to put a cherry on top of this royal tug-of-war.
A great Hawk crowd and a happy drive home for another top school battle on the horizon in Blanco coming to The Nest this Friday. The Panthers have a 1-2 record against District 29-4A so far as The Lake will want to see a Blanco, 1-3 record going back to their River.
Go Hawks!!
