Hawks Gold Team Learn Lessons in Loss to the Hays Rebels

Running Back and Linebacker Reef Malish is ready for the Gold’s Next Game!!

The Canyon Lake Gold team played against a stacked deck in their opening loss to the Hays JV B squad on Thursday, 26-0.

                    Go Hawks!!

This CL Gold group had a mix of mostly Freshman & Sophomores and that was evident on the kick-off as these Rebels could be seen knocking CL’s players off their feet in a futile attempt of blocking these much larger compadres.

That is what led to amassing just 3 first downs and 50 yards of total offense. As this Hays team was able to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

The Good News? This can be answered on a couple of fronts.

This Gold team will have 5 total games and those other games will be a more, apples to apples, contests.

On another front, the Gold will be pitted against this Hays School later this year, but on this next visit the game will actually be against their Freshman crew. That should allow CL to exact some revenge or at least have a motivated sense to take into a battle after being dominated by this older Rebel’s team.

Improvement was accomplished on this night when Hays was able to have 2 one play drives on their two first times on offense.

On the Rebels next drive the Hawks defense caused a fumble and then were able to slow Hays down to longer drives without any break-a-way scores or explosive plays.

Canyon City Grill says Go Hawks!!

On CL’s last possession, The Lake was able to garner 2 first downs and 44 yards that showed there was no quit for these Hawk Athletes.

One of those players (which happened to be the oldest player on the Gold Team) was Reef Malish who played on both sides of the ball. That age difference could be seen in how Malish was able to dish out some pain on his running and hitting on that defensive side of the ball.

“We played with heart… our whole team were out there playing with heart,” Malish said with heart. “I do take a leadership role and I spend my time trying to get them (Younger Hawksters) on the right track before each play.”

On what it was like for a 97 degree day against an older team, “We were playing with 14 year old lineman against those older lineman and we will be ready for our next meeting with Hays because it will be a pretty even game against their (Hays) Freshman team.”

Let’s Go Hawks & Stay Cool!!

On how well the team started playing as this game got older, Malish said, “I know playing their defense, we were trying to keep on the right track and have our ends pinching inside so we could bounce to the outside…but yes, I did like to go through them too!!”

These are the good times of learning and now waiting for next week when this Hawk Gold team can meet players that they can see eye to eye.

Can’t wait and Go Hawks!!
