CL’s Freshman Lose a Bizarro Game to Weiss, 26-20

CL Freshman post-game talks after a loss. First time in their history.

With more than two years of getting no worse than a tie, The Lake’s Freshman found themselves on the short end of a stick after suffering an out of whack loss to Weiss, 26-20.

       Go Hawks Beat the Texans

“These kids fought their tail off,” Coach Bill Greene stated. “We will need to clean-up some things on our Special Teams.”

This would be one of those, ‘Don’t Read the Stats’, to find out what a final score might have been.

Case and point.

Total yardage was an overwhelming advantage for the Hawks, 353 yards to 96 for the Wolves.

First Downs? Easy….Advantage Hawks. 21 to 5

Just go down the list and Canyon Lake would be winning this contest like last week when this Freshman crew disposed of Marble Falls by 46 points.

A basic stat box will usually not include special teams and turnovers are usually an after thought. Those two items were the main cause in this set-back that this Freshman team had with a tie or lead up to those last 30 seconds left in regulation.

Read’em and weep with the following plays that led to this unorthodox loss.

Basic Wolf score the old fashion way early in that 2nd quarter when the Wolves marched 49 yards for their first and only score by the offense. Two explosive plays with runs of 30 and 25 yards that was a result of the Wolves speed and this eventual score tied the score, 6-6.

CL Freshman responded quickly covering 57 yards on 9 plays and a Cole Cason 1 yard plunge, 14-6.

     Go Hawks beat Wimberley!!

With an 8 point lead, Canyon Lake would jump out with a two touchdown lead when Helijah Johnson decided to act like a bowling ball by knocking pins down all over the field on a 68 yard run. A 5 yard run by Johnson on the next play completed this drive and having the Hawks in what might have been a comfortable lead, 20-6.

The Hawk fans did not have time to sit down, on the next kick-off when a Wolf running a 75 yard kick-off return to pay dirt that still had a Hawk lead, 20-12.

This would be one of three bizarro plays that would be unveiled by Weiss.

A lost fumble on CL’s next possession that did not result in points for the Visitors but would be an indication of future catastrophic happenings.

With a Hawk next drive that was stopped resulted in their first punt of the season and maybe since this group of players have been running over opponents during their Middle School Years.

The result did not end well as the Wolves’ speed would take this punt back 70 yards for a score that still had your Hawks with a precarious 2 point lead after a failed 2 pt conversion attempt, 20-18.

That punt return happened with 5:32 left on the game clock and the Hawks with the ball.

            Let’s Go Hawks!

But another turnover, this time a fumble on the 15 yard line and a returned fumble for 75 yards resulted in a Weiss lead with a paltry 30 seconds left on the clock.

The Hawks started their last possession 49 yards away from keeping a ‘never been beat’ mantra in tact.

It would be a Johnson versus the Wolves final script after taking the first snap 18 bruising yards to the Wolves 31 yard line and 22 seconds left for a miraculous come-back.

Two more running plays by Johnson had the Hawks on the 15 yard line with time becoming preciously short.

After an incompletion Canyon Lake would have one final attempt with 3 seconds on the clock. A time-out would keep things in suspense and with CL needing 12 yards for a score.

Everyone in the Hawk Stadium would guess that the next play would be Johnson with his final attempted running play that garnered 11 of the 12 yards needed for a score in this classic battle.

With this loss, The Lake’s Freshman team, will have to see how they will respond next week in Wimberley after being on the other end of a score. Time will tell….

Let’s Go Hawks Beat Wimbo!!!
