CL Hawks JV Get Redemption Win over Smithville JV, 32-2

Matthew Soza and Connor Windham combined for 153 rushing yards in Hawk win over Smithville JV.

The Hawk Junior Varsity got rid of that bad taste in their mouth after last week’s loss to Wimberley in dominating Smithville JV on both sides of the ball in winning, 32-2.

No, that was not a safety or a shot inside the arc for the Tigers rather a scene that is rare after blocking an extra-point try by CL, Smithville would run that ball back to their goal line, resulting in 2 points.

That was also the only highlight for the Visitors on this lightning filled night at the Hawk Field.

CL’s Defense would force 3 punts, recover a fumble (on the 2nd play) and then getting help from the Clock as time ran out on Smithville all in those first two quarters. That resulted in just 2 first downs while Canyon Lake scored on all of their drives but one. An interception stopped The Lake’s 3rd drive to start the 2nd quarter.

It was as easy as, 1-2-3 after Matthew Soza took the first hand-off for 8 yards, a Dominik Vaillant dashing on a 56 yarder, and then relying on a 4 yard burst up the middle by Reid Simpson for a quick 10 point lead, 12-2.

Soza was a work-horse in this game in leading CL with 137 yards and averaging right at 10 yards per tote.

Soza is a hard runner but on many of his runs, the first Tiger to get a hand on this Hawk, was while running past the line of scrimmage. That allowed much of Soza’s damage to the opposing team being exacted against those defensive backs.

Bunk-Haus says Way to Go CL!!

“They (Offensive Line) are everything and help us (Running Backs) to gain speed and go,” Soza said very complimentary. “We trust them and their blocks and that helps in gaining yardage.”

Soza certainly did his part in making those lineman look good with yardage after first contact while plowing through many a Tiger on this night.

On how last week’s loss helped in the motivation department against Smithville, Soza quipped, “That was a tough loss and we were really pssssd off and we wanted redemption and wanted to make something happen.”

Canyon Lake was able to make something happen in putting this game away with two scoring drives to end the first half. A 7 play drive covering 32 yards when Soza scored from two yards out…followed by another 7 play drive after recovering a Tiger fumble when QB Keith Bowers found a wide open Blayne Carnes from 30 yards out, 26-2.

Smithville could only generate 12 yards and was in the negative using their run offense.

              Way to Go Hawks

The 2nd Half was more of the same with another Tiger punt to start the half and The Lake scored on their 2nd possession when Soza finished the drive on a 4th down play needing 6 yards for a first.

Canyon Lake has an Offensive Lineman with the longest run on a fumble that Noah Du Menil called a pitch, when Connor Windham was able to scoop the rock up for a 16 yard gain.

“We found our offense and started establishing the run,” Windham said like a Coach. “We wanted redemption after last week’s loss and our (offensive) line wanted to establish the trenches for our team!”

Windham just smiled when told of his record run after picking up the (fumble) pitch from Du Menil.

Soza bullied his way for 24 yards for a score on what would be the final play of this shortened game due to lightening.

Canyon Lake runs their record to 3-1 and will have next week off before going to Seguin for a contest during CL’s Varsity bye week.

Way to Go JV Hawks!!
