CL Hawks Start District with a Win over the Taylor Ducks, 41-7

Canyon Lake beat a winless team like a team is suppose to beat a winless team as the Ducks could not swim in their loss, 41-7.

The Hawks Defense was nails in giving up just one hick-up for 63 yards…but this whole game was another step in a good direction as CL’s offense came to the party in the 2nd quarter and did not leave until the opera lady started to sing.

“We were good in all three phases of the game,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “It is never easy to beat Taylor but we will now go into our next game with a, 5-1 record and 1-0 in district.”

Canyon Lake could not get their offense in gear through that first quarter…but when they did, the scoring came in bunches, in scoring 27 points during the second quarter.

A 75 yard run by Nic Rivera was the catalyst that seemed to wake this sleeping giant on this night.

“We were noticing that their team would not get back on the field in a hurry, so our Coaches said for us to get to the line and snap the ball….they (Taylor) looked confused and the hole opened up and I was not going to let them catch me,” Rivera said when talking about his run. “Our offensive line busted their butt tonight.”

Shawn Pendleton and Nic Rivera will be looking forward to another tough Burnet squad.

CL would have their first, two players over 100 yards, for this season in this game as Rivera was joined by James Bates who finished this contest with 120 yards.

“Their line could not handle us,” Shawn Pendleton said in talking bout how the defense was able to control these Ducks. Pendleton was one of many Hawks that took up residency in Taylor’s backfield.

“When we have games like this, I like to kill the quarterback and the team just wants to get the ball,” Pendleton continued. “We cannot be complacent and we will need to keep on working.”

Those words were based on what will be coming up next for the Hawks.

District 28-4A has a very solid group of teams and Burnet is a much better team than last year’s squad. Another road game will have Canyon Lake on the hot seat as this will be 4 weeks of tough outings.

Canyon City Grill says Go Hawks!!

“These next four weeks will be a slugfest,” Coach Drum chimed in. “In order for us to beat our next opponents…we still have some things we need to clean-up, but tonight we took a step in the right direction.”

No turnovers and reducing penalties were two of those little things that helped in getting this game in the bag. The Hawk’s slow start will need to change as this season matures, as this offense will need to be starting when the game kicks off.

“We had our best practices this past week and our next game will be the most important game,” Rivera closed. “All 3 phases are coming together and we are real close in getting to be a good team. I am looking forward to play our next game!”

Canyon Lake will be in action on Friday in Burnet and getting the offense there early would be a good start.

Go Hawks!!
