Billies’ Red Team has Finger-Prints All over Them After Hawk Win, 28-14

The 3rd time was a charm for Canyon Lake’s Gold team after two previous games that ended in a tie, this Hawk Gold team took Freddie’s Red team in their final game of the series, 28-14.

“I am very pleased with the performance of the team this week,” Head Gold Coach John Barthels said. “We started a little slow, but we found the gas pedal on offense and defense and held it down to finally get a win with a pretty evenly matched team.”

This contest had Riley Terry’s fingerprints found all over the field as this upstart player was seen all over the field making game changing plays at each stop.

Running Back/Defensive Back Terry was johnny on the spot on this night as this jack of all trades, recovered two fumbles and had an interception in helping secure this win. Terry was busy with a rushing touchdown to boot with 51 yards on just 3 carries.

Riley Terry takes care of all the different aspects in win over Freddie.

“This was the first week that Riley (Terry) played with the Gold team and we could not have asked for a better game,” Coach Barthels said after seeing Terry’s finger prints on his sunglasses.”

The game started with a Hawk lost fumble on the first play of the game which had been a trend in CL’s previous contests in this 3-game series.

Fredericksburg would take just 5 plays before scoring with their shortened field advantage in this evenly matched set of games.

CL would respond with an error free drive covering 67 yards in just 6 plays. Half of those plays had a Hawk with an explosive play that was over 10 yards.

Two of those snaps was Chevy Standifer starting this drive with a 12 yarder up the middle before upping his game with a 21 yard jaunt that left him just short of the goal line. Standifer had 40 of those 67 yards on this drive as he finished this battle breaking the 100 yard threshold totaling 104 for the night.

“Chevy has run tough all year and tonight he finished his runs with some pop,” Coach Barthels praised. “He was a key factor in our win.”

Terry (you guessed it) had an instrumental 28 yard burst on this set of plays that would set up Alex Mejia on his one yard dive up the middle in scoring. The 2 point try failed left Canyon Lake needing more as they were still trailing 6-8.

The Billies started their next drive with two plays of 8 and 9 yards before Terry (has The ReSporter mentioned this player yet?) stared down the Fredericksburg’s QB and would snag the pass for an interception and a 40 yard return in giving CL good field position needing 24 yards for a go-ahead TD.

Terry was responsible for multiple yardage in several difference aspects of this win.

                  1) 3 carries for 51 yards
                  2) 1 interception for a 40 yard return/
                  3) 2 fumble recoveries with the 2nd one going for 27 yards.
118 total yards and two TD’s

A two play drive that had McCormick and Standifer each with runs over 10 yards and a Hawk lead that would stand until a deluge of wet stuff at the end of the contest with a Hawk victory.

The Lake’s defense would hold after, Terry recovered his first of two Billies fumbles and this one allowed CL to start in their own territory.

Chevy Standifer tops 104 yards rushing in win over Fredericksburg.

The Hawk’s offense would continue their mastery in taking an 11 play drive that finished with a nifty jet sweep reverse on a 4th down and needing 12 yards to continue the drive. This play surprised the Billies as, you guessed it, Terry took the pitch and dodged a couple of Billies in dancing to the end zone and Hawk, 22-8 lead with less than a minute remaining before halftime.

“We have hurt them (Billies) off the edge each week with Peyton McCormick and he did it again on a 4th down play that was called back after a holding call,” Coach Barthels stated. “I knew it was perfect time for a little trickery when we ran what looked like the same play off the edge, but with the addition of Riley, we ran a reverse that was executed to perfection for the go ahead touchdown that had everyone, including myself, fired up and we played well the rest of the game.”

Fredericksburg, was not finished, and did not need much time in scoring on a one play drive when Fabian Castaneda had a 55 yard run down the Freddie’s sideline and getting this game back to an one score ordeal and having honors in receiving the ball to start the 2nd half.

That home town momentum was put to rest quickly after another Fredericksburg fumble to start the 2nd half. The Lake would not be able to score on thier drive but did move the ball to the Billies 19 yard line. (As good as a Punt)

A final dagger coming from????? If you guessed Terry then you would be correct, as he blitzed on a play that had the Freddie QB getting a high snap in the shot-gun and after knocking the ball into the air had enough time for Terry to grab the ball and race 27 yards for another Hawk score and what would be a Game — Set — Match win for your Hawks.

           Way to Go Hawks!!

Terry was probably calling plays for the offense and defense as The ReSporter saw the Canyon Lake Coaches giving Terry the keys to the bus for a ride home.

There has never been a Hawk game that had one player take control of a game from both sides of the ball.

This win gave The Lake control in this series and a rain soaked ride home.

On what happens next for the Gold team, Coach Barthels would let us know, “I am happy to say that we have found another game for this group next Thursday at 5pm in Hondo. This is by far the most games we have gotten to play as a Gold team in a season and we are in talks with a couple of schools for the final week of the season as well.”

“I love coaching kids that love to play football and when you can win most of those games, they want to continue as a group to get better and we appreciate their efforts!”

Rylie Terry was driving back to get his finger prints analyzed so there can be some more escapades for future Hawks on football fields across the hill-country.

Way to Go Hawks!!
