Canyon Lake could not keep up with an offensive juggernaut against the Badgers losing, 56-35 in Lampasas.

           Beat Liberty Hill!!

This would be a pick-your-poison game for the Hawk’s defense as Lampasas finished with 558 yards with a balanced offense that had 262 yards rushing and 296 through the air.

“We matched their intensity at times and we responded and kept playing,” Head Coach Charley Drum said in retrospect.

The loss was not all bad after seeing an up and down offense this year put together a passing game that was last seen during the 2012 season, it was CL’s last season before installing a slot-t running game.

“That was a good sign as that was our best passing for this year,” Coach Drum closed. “Those were some good things we can take into next week’s game.”

Peyton McMullen had his best game for his career finishing with 263 yards passing and finding 5 different Hawks with a reception. Jeremy Greene would lead that covey of players by breaking the 100 yard barrier with 103 of those yards on 3 catches.

“I just trusted our receivers and our offensive line protected me,” McMullen recalled. “We executed very well.” On how this team will respond for next week’s game? “Play hard and play fast!”

The game started with a Badger team that has a very good QB in Junior Ace Whitehead and several players that have those skilled attributes that can make an opposing team pay by the run or pass.

QB Peyton McMullen and Receiver Jeremy Greene after record passing game.

That would be the case on this night as the Badgers who will now go to Fredericksburg next week, with the winner taking a District 28-4A Championship.

For Canyon Lake this loss still has them with a chance of finishing with a 3rd seeded berth by getting a win at home against Liberty Hill next week.

Those Hawk passing yards was just what the Doctor ordered. Those airway yards will now give opponents more to think about. It will have a chance in helping CL’s rushing attack a better chance to take over.

On this night the Badgers was the aggressor that had Canyon Lake playing catch-up throughout the contest.

A 10 play 77 yard drive had 6 rushes and 4 passes which would be a common occurrence with a quick, 7-0 lead for the Home team.

Canyon Lake would make their presence known in matching the Badgers with an 87 yard drive that had an explosive 72 yard pass to James Bates that put the Hawks on their 14 yard line. The second 3rd down and 9 conversion had Bates with an 11 yard run and then Nic Rivera would tie the score.

Lampasas took just 4 plays on their next drive that was accented with a 43 yard pass play and a, 14-7 Badger lead.

CL would convert another 3rd and long on the next possession with a 15 yard pass from the shot gun formation and then a 69 yard run by Bates and another tied contest.

           Hawks are the Best!!

Bates is closing in on a 1000 yard season and seems to have a knack in getting long gainers that have come in most of The Lake’s games this season.

That Hawk score would be the last tie, as these Badgers, would unleash their lethal offense with 4 consecutive scores until the Hawks could respond.

CL would get their offense awakened in scoring 3 more times and finishing this battle by scoring the most points against Lampasas this season.

Sophomore Jeremy Greene would score his 3rd touchdown this year via the pass and then, Freshman Helijah Johnson, was able to score his first Varsity TD from 1 yard out and finished with 53 punishing yards.

What Greene’s thoughts were on his solid night, “That was all our offensive line and Peyton (McMullen).”We knew this was a good team….we just have to realize that we can be there and that will build our culture.”

On what next week will bring, “We are going to rebuild and reload and we will be ready and we have been waiting for this team (Liberty Hill) all year.”

Kyle Yuill would be CL’s final score late in the 4th stanza with a nice 22 yard catch that converted a 4th and 10 yard play and final, 56-35.

This contest had a lot of first’s in running a slot-t that came from CL’s passing game.

Greene’s 103 yards receiving was one yard short of Tanner Faris who had 104 yards receiving against Taylor. Now there are two players who have broken that 100 yard barrier.

               Last Week in District 28-4A
               Team W L Pct

               Liberty Hill 1 3 .250
               Taylor 0 4 .000
               Games and Scenario:
Liberty Hill @ CL Hawks: If CL wins they will clinch 3rd Seed.
A loss would have a tie breaker with Liberty Hill and Burnet.
Those 3 teams would come down to points scored.
Burnet       @ Taylor : Burnet is the favorite against the Ducks.
Lampasas     @ Billies : Winner will win District.

So with simple logic, there are 3 teams battling for those last two playoff spots.

Liberty Hill would not qualify with a loss based on Burnet’s win over the Panthers. But a loss will have an abacus working into the night to give the final say of who is in or out!

Go Hawks and Beat the Panthers!!
