Canyon Lake’s Lady Basketball team finished their Kerrville OLH Tournament with an unblemished 4-0 record after sweeping through an array of schools this past Friday and Saturday.

                         Go Hawks!

“We got a lot of playing in, over the past couple of days,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said. “Overall, we played pretty good considering that we just came off of a break.”

Coach Burleson continued his assessment, “We must improve on the defensive end. We were called for a lot of reaching and didn’t move our feet as a unit to the best of our abilities. That will get us in a lot of trouble if we don’t get better.”

The Lady Hawks had not played in 11 days and add being short handed has had this team piling on playing time without much release.

“Rebounding wise, we struggled,” Coach Burleson continued. “We need to focus on blocking out and being desperate going after loose balls. Some of this is from being tired and out of basketball rhythm from the break….but we have to get through that and treat the basketball like it was a $100 dollar bill floating around. Go get it.”

If there was a $100 dollar bill floating around The ReSporter then you would have to do more than just blocking out. Yes, The ReSporter, would have fouled out within the first 3 or 4 minutes after the tip-off.

“I was pleased with our retention of most of our offensive concepts,” Coach Burleson finished. “It was nice to see us moving the ball at times and finding good, open shots. Our team has always been unselfish and will look to find an open teammate.

Canyon City Grill says Go Hawks!!

On what CL was wanting to accomplish before district comes calling during the first part of January, Coach Burleson quipped, “What we were hoping to get out of the tournament, we got. Get some games in. Get a little back into the swing of things and run off some turkey, ham and pecan pie or whatever.”

During these four games, Canyon Lake had double digit scorers that were shared by several Hawk Ladies as Sophia Barber topped them all after pouring in 23 points in the Hawks win over San Antonio Legacy.

Barber sunk 5 of her shots beyond the 3 point line to go along with her 4 buckets inside the arch for a total of 9 made shots in this game.

Every Girl corralled a rebound for a total of 33 in this game. Jessie Melendez paced the club with 10 bounds with 6 of those on the offensive glass.

       Go Hawks!!

Another good sign during this 4 game sweep happened from the charity stripe as CL was good on 83% of those shots in the win over Legacy.

The Hawks shot 74% (29-39) from the charity stripe with the 4 games combined which now has The Lake shooting over 50 percent for the season from the line.

Canyon Lake found themselves fighting from behind for much of this contest. Legacy enjoyed a, 22-17 halftime lead and that lead increased another 3 points going in that final period.

CL started this quarter needing 9 points for a win and went on an all out blitz in winning the period by 16 points and an 8 point victory.

In the Hawks next battle against Nueces Canyon, Chelsea Tschoepe (13) and Lainee Moses (11) led The Lake in this battle. This game had the Hawks with the lead for much of this contest as CL’s defense held NC under 30 points for the game.

Tschoepe also led the Hawk Clan with 9 rebounds and Melendez finished with 8 boards.

On Saturday, Canyon Lake was back to work for two more wins in taking care of San Antonio Lutheran and John Paul II out of Corpus Christi.

Marley Carrizales won the point battle after pouring in 11 points against SA Lutheran while Melendez scored 13 points in CL’s win over John Paul II that had this Hawk team even more short handed with Moses not suiting up for this final Kerrville Tourney contest.

                        Go Hawk’s!!

Canyon Lake went into their 4th period down by one point, 28-27 to this Corpus Christi school but another good 4th quarter in outscoring John Paul, 15-4 in that final 8 minutes and a Hawk Tournament Sweep.

Melendez was the Hawk leader with 9 rebounds.

Canyon Lake will continue their Tournament swing in a Boerne Geneva Tournament on Thursday January 2nd. Sporting a 14-2 record, some more preparation will be needed as a tough district slate will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Way to Go Hawks!!
