CL Hawks Ladies Break Even in Last Tourney after Two Wins on Friday

Canyon Lake started their last tourney with two losses before a Friday sweep to finish with a 2-2 record and wins over Junction and Bracken Christian.

“Overall, we really struggled securing rebounds,” Head Coach Zach Burleson assessed the four game tourney. “We have worked on this and will continue to work on it. We have to get better….Against Lutheran, and the first half versus Incarnate Word, we did not play very good defense….It was just not our best team effort. So we paid for it.”

“Hopefully we get it out of our system,” Coach Burleson continued. “There were some bright spots as Marley (Carrizales) really stepped up and looked good….these were the type of games where you can’t give up easy points on the defensive end with missed assignments or giving up second chance points.”

Marley Carrizales and Sophia Barber were to two offensive weapons deployed by the Hawks through most of this tournament after both girls finished their Junction Eagles game scoring 17 and 16 points respectfully.

Barber ended this four game tourney averaging 12 points per outing while Carrizales averaged right at 10 points during her tourney sprint. Barber shot 48% from the 3 point arc while sinking 14 in those 4 contests….this is by far the longest stretch of shooting beyond the arc with this type of percentage in CL’s history.

In that Junction game, Carrizales (6) helped the Hawks reach 19 steals leading a good defensive effort while Kaitlyn Cox had 5 thefts for her best ever effort.

Madison Harwell had her best rebounding effort reaching double digit 10 bounds and leading CL in this category.

Canyon Lake had little doubt on how this game would end starting with a 24-1 first quarter and a final 42 point win and ran their record to a balmy, 16-4 going into their last non-district battle this next Monday when San Antonio Lutheran will be at the Hawk Nest for their rubber match after SA Lutheran evened the tally at one win a piece for this year.

CL’s first District 27-4A match will be on the road in Fredericksburg on Thursday January 9th next week.
