Hawks Start District 28-4A with Win over Bandera, 64-37 & Standings

Hawks Defense helped in Win over Bandera.

CL Hawks started this year’s edition of District 28-4A play with a win in an always tough Bandera venue, 64-37.

              Let’s Go Hawks!!

“We did what we needed to do tonight,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman assessed. “This is a long trip and it was good to come in and get a win….we did not panic after they started with a lead and we started making some shots.”

This was The Lake’s sixth win in the last seven games against the Bulldogs as CL has controlled this series since a two loss year during the 2013 campaign.

Canyon Lake had three players with double digit scoring with Patrick McAuliffe (18), Rico Griffin (14), and Rylee Spaulding (11) playing those roles.

“This was a good first game and it was good to get all the players acclimated for district,” McAuliffe said. “It was a good win on the road.”

On how McAuliffe’s 3 pointers helped spread the floor, “Get to the basket was all I was thinking.”

McAuliffe joined 5 other Hawks, (Andrew Riali, Garrett Winters, Jacob Ramirez, Parker Mott and Sam Schimank) who have been successful with 4 or more 3-pointers in a game during their careers.

Griffin is now the All-Time Best Rebounder in Hawk history after pulling down 16 against these Dogs.

Griffin has the top 3 rebound totals this year as this was his 2nd 16 bound game after securing 18 in an earlier contest with Blanco this year. All three at the top of the heap for Hawk rebounding.

Bandera made their presence known after opening the game up with a 3 pointer before CL would answer with 7 points for a brief 4 point lead, 7-3 with 5:34 remaining in that opening period.

                   Go Hawks!!

The Dogs would bite again with an 8 point barrage that had the home team reclaiming the lead, 11-7 as their 3 point shooting was on early on as the run caused a Coach Chapman time-out.

A Rylee Spaulding put back would secure a lead that would not be threatened again in this contest. Spaulding scored 6 points in a span of a minute that would give CL a, 17-15 lead going into the 2nd Quarter.

Spaulding would continue his scoring with 5 more points to open the 2nd quarter that would give the Hawks separation with a 6 point lead.

It would be an 18 point quarter with a Hawk defense that allowed 7 points, that had CL enjoying a 13 point advantage by half-time, 35-22.

“We went big and after our Lampasas game we had talked about trying to find a way of getting these two on the court at the same time,” Coach Chapman said when responding to having Spaulding and McMullen starting CL’s run that started this break-a-way win.

The Lake finished with 45 rebounds while dishing out 12 assists showing a complete domination against Bandera.

Peyton McMullen played a tall game by swatting 4 shots away which would alter the Bulldog’s shots the rest of this game as Canyon Lake finished with 6 blocks for the game.

          Go Hawks!!

“I really focus on size when we match-up with a smaller team,” McMullen said with resolve. “This was a great win and gave us a statement for the whole district.”

This win gives CL, 13 for the year, as the Hawks have just 2 seasons with more…a 14 win year in 2010 and 16 win season in 2017. That campaign still has the distinction as the only winning season since play began in 2009.

This was the 9th win in the past 11 outings but that next hurdle will not be an easy one to get over, with a home date with Boerne on Tuesday of next week.

A good time to come out and cheer on your Hawk team against this perennial powerhouse in the Greyhounds.

Way to Go Hawks!!
