CL Lady Hawks Lose to Billies to Start 2nd Round of District
Canyon Lake knew they would have their work cut out for them on this night but a super first half did offer hope before a Hawk woeful 3rd quarter in a loss the Fredericksburg, 49-30.
“This will be a State Tourney team,” Head Coach Zach Burleson said admirably. “We got cold and the 3rd quarter and that was the difference in the ball game. Everyone contributed and this was our best game this year.” But we will have to go at it and do it again.”
The Lake is in a situation that all the cards have not been dealt with a 3 way tie for that 4th spot in District 28-4A play after the first round.
For this round of battles, Wimberley will be the one team that Canyon Lake, Bandera, and Llano will be watching. The Texans did not blow out any of those three schools and finishing unblemished the second go round would be a tall order.
Wimberley and Llano were in action last Tuesday and a Texan win, 44-27. That poses a problem for Llano as they will now need the Lady Texan’s to beat CL and Bandera for a realistic shot or sweeping those two contests.
You get the picture, Canyon Lake has Wimbo this week and that same scenario will be for the Hawks as well as the Bulldogs during these two weeks.
If Canyon Lake can play this 2nd round like they started against the Billies, then chances would be heightened for sure but anything can happen when the margin of error is so thin.
Foul trouble was the culprit in this loss after seeing several CL starters parade to the bench in that first half in order to keep them eligible for those last two periods of play. The Lake used some long range shots from Sophia Barber to keep this game within striking distance after sinking 4 three pointers with 3 of those shots turned out to be all of CL’s points in that first period.
Canyon Lake outscored Freddie in that 2nd quarter leaving a 2 point lead for the Visiting Team. Jessie Melendez was instrumental as well as another 3 pointer from Barber that helped in keeping this game close.
That was not the way this contest started, however, with a Fredericksburg jumping out to a, 9-3 lead at the halfway point of the opening 8 minutes. CL would continue their climb with that Barber 3 and then a Chelsea Tschoepe 2 pointer that tied the score, 20 all with right at 2 minutes remaining before halftime.
This ranked Billie team came out of their locker with a different resolve to start the 2nd half and put the game away with a 15 point advantage that left way too much ground to cover to finish the game.
Shelby Murphy was another player that turned in a good performance after Canyon Lake lost the services of Guard Lainee Moses who played this game with foul trouble and eventually committing her 5th foul in that 2nd half.
Murphy helped stir the pot with 2 assists in that final period and only one turnover.
“We played great defense and we were more aggressive by going through our plays better,” Murphy stated. “We will keep our confidence up and don’t give up right away and keep our intensity up!!”
Those last comments from Murphy was in response to how CL will be able to take this loss to Freddie going into these final 4 contests.
A loss that could turn to a win as this season begins their final turn before the finish line.
