Lady Hawks Win Big over Bandera, 55-20
The streak started in a loss to Fredericksburg to start the 2nd round of district after Canyon Lake continued this impressive run in taming the Bulldogs, 55-20.
“We played a lot better than the first time we played them,” Head Coach Zach Burleson started. “Our shooting percentage was fantastic. Some of the was because of better ball movement, some of it is that we hit shots.”
CL’s overall game has been a welcome sight since that Billies loss that showed a fight throughout that contest minus a one bad quarter.
Shooting 61% from inside the arc and 57% from beyond the arc was good but adding an 100% from the foul line scored that proverbial trifecta. A stellar defense was present on the other side of the court after allowing only 20 points to the Home Team.
“We are better shooters than what the first 4 games of district indicated,” Coach Burleson picked and rolled. “And now we are back to where we need to be percentage wise.”
Four Hawks finished with double digit scoring, Marley Carrizales (15), Jessie Melendez (12), Kaityn Cox (10), and Sophia Barber (10).
CL did not fall in love with their 3 point shot on this night and only had 3 offensive rebounds. Those rebounds will usually be low when a team is shooting over 60% from the floor which this Hawk team will take on any given night as that translates into wins.
Wimberley lost to Freddie while Boerne took care of Llano which will now show The Lake with their eyes on a Texan team and a chance for a 3rd seed possibility.
“We have now given ourselves a chance at getting in the playoffs,” Coach Burleson closed. “I’m proud of the girls for getting back into this position after a real tough start. We could have folded our tents, but chose to fight and for that I’m proud of us.”
Night and Day difference from that first encounter with this Bulldog team as that same intensity that started this contest was present to the final horn.
Canyon Lake had been slow in starting their 2nd half games in district but on this night a, 16-1 quarter would indicate a killer attitude in a district that does not take prisoners.
Yes, there were 22 turnovers which was 7 more than the Hawks have averaged this season. A stifling defense nullified that negative stat on this night however.
With Barber’s two 3-point makes, she has now taken over Reagan Heun for the most made 3 point shots in a season with 54. Not bad company, for sure, as this Barber cuts with precision when she is in her element to go along with her 3 assists.
Lainee Moses contributed with a 5 assists and 5 steals evening in orchestrating this road masterpiece.
This win gives CL their third 20 win season in a row that was not looking good for this struggling team few games ago.
Canyon Lake will be enjoying their final home game this Friday when those Boerne Greyhounds come to the Hawk Nest.
These Senior Girls have left a nice footprint for those future teams as many of these ladies are decorated on those All-Time Lists for the upper echelon for the most part.
Have a look and come help them celebrate with your attendance this Friday.
