Canyon Lake’s Sports will Have Some Changes after Alignment

The UIL Alignment has Canyon Lake with some new neighbors for the upcoming two years in Football.

Boerne will continue in a more southern district while Liberty Hill has been moved up to a 5A level and there will be some schools that stayed the same.

The Hawks will have two scrimmages with Cuero and Elgin High School. The Elgin scrimmage will take part at the Hawk Nest.

CL will start their season facing Wimberley for an away, Battle of the Back-Bone contest.

This Year’s Home Games:

September 4th La Grange
September 18th Alamo Heights (Homecoming)
October 9th Ausint LBJ
October 16th Taylor
October 30th Lampasas (Senior Night)

Three of those dates will be first time opponents against some formidable teams.

Those road games has some interesting games with the Texans along with Blanco as both of those schools have been main-stays since The Lake’s first games started back in 2008.

Fredericksburg is another school that has been a dance partner since CL became a school.
Burnet will continue to be in the same area code with that final away game being against Georgetown East View.

        *District 13-4A Division I Games

Head Coach Charley Drum had this to say bout this setting, “We made an effort to kind of beef up our non-district schedule to prepare us for our always tough district. We replaced Liberty Hill with a perennial 5A playoff team in Austin LBJ. I t will once again be a dogfight once district play begins.”

The combined record for the above schools was, 66-40 and all but 3 schools had winning records. The Hawks were schooled by La Grange the last time this team was on a Hawk schedule and on the other side of the spectrum has Blanco who still resides with a 3A by their name. Even with their lower classification, this Panther team held their own these past two campaigns.

Those Hawk wins over Blanco were 7 and 10 point battles. The Lake does have a 2 game all-time advantage in this, 7-5 series.

Canyon Lake will enter this season with 4 winning seasons, in a row, which is the longest streak since games started counting during the 2008 season. In fact, CL will start with an all-time win/loss of 67 wins and losses or .500 percent. Before this 4 year streak, The Lake, was to the negative in wins by 14 games after ending the 2015 season, 37 wins and 51 losses.

La Grange had their way the last time a 2 game stint was in the cards during the, 2012-13 years. This Leopard team had an opponent last year for comparison on what they might bring this coming season. A win over Smithville, 14-13, who CL came back to beat this past year, 55-28.

Taylor was the only school that did not win a game and Alamo Heights finished with 3 wins but this school was playing 5A opponents.

Austin LBJ has been a tough team for several years and will be on the large enrollment size based on moving down to the 4A classification.

For those other Sports the Alignment will consist of the following schools for those, ‘other’, sports. (Volleyball-Basketball-etc.)

                            Bandera
                            Boerne
                            Davenport
                            Fredericksburg
                            Wimberley

For Volleyball, Davenport will not be in this district and that will leave District 28-4A with 5 teams.

District 28-4A will have their first round of post-season contests with District 27-4A schools:

 

                            Cuero
                            Navarro
                            Gonzales
                            La Vernia
                            Pleasanton

For the Football’s District 13-4A Division I, those first round of playoffs would be pitted against District 14-4A Division I. This will be a different route since this district had their first round of playoff games going South.

District 15-4A Division I will be loaded with several schools that spun down in the Corpus Christi area and that group of schools will have their first round of playoffs against the lower valley schools.

Now Canyon Lake will finish their Spring Sports with hopes of some good wins and more playoffs as they can now look to the future for all those Mountain Valley Middle School classes.
