CL Hawks Could not Catch the Bulldogs in Loss in Basketball, 56-53
Canyon Lake Boys Basketball could not extend their season after losing a tough battle with Bandera, 56-53.
“This was not the way we wanted to finish for our Seniors,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said dejectedly. “These kids did not deserve ending like this….they played hard but we had too many mistakes…as our thoughts and Prayers go out for Rico (Griffin), his injury literally made me sick.”
The Lake has not had a lot of luck in their last two seasons after losing Parker Mott to injury, their leading scorer, last season and that same scenario happened again when Rico Griffin had his accident during the warm-ups that finished his career without a chance to help the team in this Play-In Contest.
One difference with Griffin (averaging 15 points per game) being out of action was losing CL’s leading rebounder as well.
That left a lot of players needing to up their game to help fill that void in this match-up.
That first half had this Bulldog crew with a 5 point lead, 33-28 and Canyon Lake needing to get off their bench and make this a game.
Canyon Lake outscored Bandera in that 3rd period turning their 5 point deficit to a 2 point gain going into the 4th quarter, 45-43.
With 7:26 on the clock had the Bulldogs with a 4 point lead to start the 2nd half, 31-35 before some technicals assessed to both teams.
CL was able to turn that around with 12 point unanswered points and a Hawk lead, 43-35 with 2:48 left for that 3rd period.
Tyler Pauly and Rylee Spaulding led CL with 13 points a piece while Trent MacRoberts leading with 9 rebounds.
During that last quarter Canyon Lake was able to increase their lead to five points, 49-44 with 6:31 remaining, but after that point the Bulldogs would get hot and take the lead, 49-50. A Nic Rivera 2 point break to the basket got the lead back but that would be the last Hawk lead.
MacRoberts shot in the paint after a nice assist by Rivera had the game dead-locked again a 53 points with 1:50 showing on the clock.
That would be the last points of the game and season as Bandera would get the points needed for this win.
Canyon Lake could not make up enough points for this sad loss this group of players and Seniors.
The ReSporter will post some final All-Time Lists for both the Boys and Girls on Monday as there will be a chance to catch many of these players in more Spring Sports.
Way to Go Hawks!!
