Canyon Lake Boys Track & Field were victorious in this year’s Leap Year Navarro Track Meet as both Varsity and Junior Varsity beat all comers. In fact the JV Team went ahead and lapped the field after scoring 230 points with Shayne Moss scoring 43 points as a participant in 4 first play finishes and one second place finish.

            Way to Run Hawks!!

Not a bad day at the office, “Saturday was a very productive day for the Canyon Lake Boys Track Team,” Head Coach Troy Moses gloated. “We made some big gains in areas I was wanting to see improvements in. We got some basketball players back full time and a couple others back from injury so that helped us start shaping our team. What I was looking for this week is how well would our relays perform and we competed really well, still not wore we need to be at come district but we made some improvements.”

This years Hawks has regained some depth that was lost after the District Champion team two years ago.

That depth is primarily is with the Junior Varsity as you can see below after scoring 38% of all the points garnered by the 9 schools in attendance in this Leap Year Meet.

“The JV on the other hand had a great day at the Navarro Relays,” Coach Moses continued. “We won 10 of the 18 events and had the best team performance on the track in Canyon Lake history, scoring a whopping 230 points!!! Leading the way was freshman Shayne Moss, with 4 golds and one silver! His time (Moss had a 10.84 recorded time) was wind aided and we think there was a mistake in the timing. Coaches had him at a 11.09. We had several other young kids with some great performances, like freshman Helijah Johnson in the shot putt, with a putt of 41’6”, which places him 7th All-Time in Hawk history. In nine out of the 15 individual events we had more than one competitor place, that show that this was a big team accomplishment that doesn’t happen very often.”

This JV team scored in every facet of their day from the distance events that was led with Kane Reyes who now holds the 6th best Hawk 3200 meter run clocking at 11:15.20 to the Field Events that was led by a 1-2-3 finish for the Discus.

                Dash Events: 100-200-400 meter 37points
                Distance Events: 800-1600-3200 33 points
                Hurdles: 110-300 meter 22 points
                Relays: 4x100-200-400 56 points
                Field: Shot-Discus-Long Jump 82 points
                                 Triple Jump-High Jump
                                 and Pole Vault

Nic Rivera had the best run in Hawk history with a sub 15 second 110 meter hurdles as Rivera finished with 23 points leading The Lake.

          Go Hawks!!

Cody Kline (16) and Seth Titzman (10) each scored in double digits joining Rivera in that endeavor. Kline had points from 4 different events that led CL in that category.

For the Junior Varsity, Moss scored in all 5 events he entered and was joined by 9 other Hawks to score in double digits.

                                 Points # of Events
             Helijah Johnson 29 5
             Connor Windham 23 3
             Kane Reyes 18 2
             Edward Santos 15 3
             Caleb Price 14 2
             Chevy Standifer 11 2
             Gunner Walker 10 2
             Tyler Balderas 10 3
             Coby Mickey 10 1

With this many Hawk’s making noise in the Junior Varsity arena, there can be decisions on whether a younger athlete can be moved up to the Varsity.

                Let’s Go Hawks!!

Coach Moses was asked how that decision is usually made, “When it comes to moving kids from JV to Varsity, we try to look at all aspects of each of the different kids. Our number one concern is the kid, we want him to have as much success as possible. For example you might have a young freshman or sophomore out preforming a varsity athlete, but there is no use in moving that young kid up to get 5th or 6th when he can continue to WIN events at the lower level. WINNING is a contagious thing, we want to learn how to win and don’t rush the process. Other times there might be an athlete that is really excelling in one event but also participates in other events that he might not be excelling as well but is still competing. We wouldn’t want to move that athlete up and only have him compete in a single event, we want our athletes active and doing as much as possible. Now, with all that said, as we get closer to the District meet we WILL make the necessary moves to give us the best chance possible the win the District meet at the Varsity level…..even if it means an athlete is only competing in one event.

Good times as Canyon Lake will be in Kerrville this Thursday in the Tivy Antler Relays starting at noon.

Way to Go Hawks!!
