Canyon Lake Boys Soccer are in their 2nd round of District 28-4A games and with a 3-2 win over Wimberley helped solidify a 3rd seeded outcome as the regular season draws to a close.

At this writing, Fredericksburg has a half game lead over Boerne as the Hawks and Texans battle it out for those last two playoff spots.

Bandera has yet to win and with a district that comprises of only 5 schools makes the deciphering a much easier formula.

This Texan team has tied Fredericksburg for the Billies only blemish so that could make things dicey which made winning that first round game on the road huge win in facing a 2nd seed school in that first round of play during the start up of the UIL post-season.

“This game was the most important game for us to this point of the season,” Head Coach Ryan Tierney stated. “Both teams are fighting for a playoff placements with Wimberley needing a win to clinch 3rd and the Hawks needing just a tie to clench that same 3rd place seeding….this would pit either team against a second place Salado or Burnet in the first round bi-district.”

CL’s game started had a fast start with both teams going up and down the field making for a hectic first 10 minutes of action.

The Hawks were rewarded a thrown-in around the 7th minute mark when Colkin Pressgrove threw the ball into the feet of Dillon Clark from about 30 yards out.

Clark settled the ball in and with no pressure let it rip from that distance that just cleared the Wimberley keeper’s head for the first score of the game, 1-0.

The Lake dominated possession after that point, but the Texans being a sit and counterattack motif was able to tie the game at 1 goal a piece in the 20th minute, 1-1 still during the first half of play.

Senior Josh Szcech would take just 45 seconds to respond when he dribbled past 5 Texan’s and poked one in to make it, 2-1 Hawks.

Wimberley was able to catch the CL’s defensive lines that allowed a Texan goal right before half and both teams going into halftime all tied up at 2 goals a piece.

“We went into the second half with a winning mentality,” stated Coach Tierney. “We did not want to settle for a tie, we wanted to put all questions about our playoff spot to rest in the last 40 minutes.”

During that 2nd half, Canyon Lake, would control the game with minor Texan counterattacks. The Hawks dominated possessions, passing attempts and shots on goal.

CL’s final goal came off a cross from Collin Pressgrove to the The Spaniard Iñigo Echeverria to take the lead and game after the 60th minute mark.

Canyon Lake would have more chances and would dominate the rest of the second half that would insure a win and clinch the playoffs.

The Hawks are one of just two Hawk sports that have an over .500 playoff record after going to the Final Four last season and will look to continue that trend in the coming weeks.

Way to Go Hawks!!
