Week 4 on the Hawk’s Football Schedule for 2020: Alamo Heights

When CL’s coaching staff went looking for schools to play for the 2020 season they found a gem of a school in Alamo Heights in just about every way.
The Alamo Heights Independent School District traces its history starting in 1909 when that first school, a two-room wooden frame building on Townsend Avenue, was built in this picturesque area as part of a rural county district.
The present athletic stadium was built in 1938 by the Work Projects Administration. Originally, games were played at Howard Field on the present Cambridge site, where former head coach Earl “Mule ” Frazier led the football team to a first district championship in 1926 – and lent Alamo Heights its mascot. Yep the Mules. You just gotta like a school with Mule as a mascot and history as deep as Alamo Heights which was 98 years older than CLHS- a relative new comer in a geological terms, opened their doors.
On the football side of things the mules have deep rich history of a winning ball club. Since 2009, the Mules are 75-37 in the win loss column, and have traditionally had more winning years than losing seasons.
Coach Mike Norment has had the Mules with just one losing season since 2009. Last season was an unusual losing season for the Mules with that losing campaign finishing with a 3-7 record and as history will forecast the possibilities of turning it around a pretty good bet.
This team will be tough, as this is one of those schools, that truly re-loads every year with talent at every skilled position for the Blue & Gold Mules.
The mules own a 2006 State Championship title in 5A-DI beating Copperas Cove and other than last year’s 3-7 record…. You have to go back 18 years before you find another losing season.

This organization is loaded in more ways than one and they will be a much improved team from last year. When Alamo Heights come to play the Hawks, it’ll seem like a trip into the backwoods country for these prestigious followers of the Mules, the city will definitely meet the country on Sept. 18th in the Country vs City Bowl.
The Mules will return seven key players on offense. In their so called skilled positions the Mules bring back, Jr. George Flesher RB 5-9, 180; Sr. John York WR 6-1 170; Sr. Ben Seger WR 6-1 190. AH lost their QB and will breaking in a newbie with a QB that had an opportunity to get some field time.
On the Offensive-line you have Sr. David Truumees OL 6-4 250; Sr. Noah Auces G 6-3 240; Jr. Wesley “Boone” Hetrick OT 6-5 260. So these mules bring back several skilled players and the bulk of those offensive powers will come back to focus on their opposing teams.
Last season the Mules racked up the following: Offense – Passing Completions 193/346 for 2068 yards and 208 per game; Comp/Per Game 19.3; with 23 TD’s averaging 2 per/game and 11 interceptions.
On the other side of the ball, Alamo Heights defense returns seven starters. Sr. Bo DeWees DE, 6-3/220; Jr. Ben Castillo NG 6-2/235; Sr Alex Arnold OLB 6-1/ 230; Sr Gage Maples MLB 6-1/210; Sr. Parker Klumpp OLB 5-10/190; Sr. Trey Sullivan DT 6-2/220; and Jr. Leo Oseguera Abrahamsson DL 6-2-220.

The linebackers for this squad are experienced and have the ability with three year seniors to hold their own on the field against opponents.
The Hawks are going to have their hands full and will get to experience a well followed Blue and Gold football team. The Mules travel very well and this will be Canyon Lake’s homecoming and it will be a tough game.
This 5A D-II team will definitely fit the bill for Canyon Lakes traditionally tough non-district schedule. CLB does like the advantage that the mules do not play anyone who runs a Slot T – which in the past has troubled 5A schools for the most part, which has ended with a loss.
The overall defensive speed for the Mules is not that fast, but they are solid. The overall lack of quickness may serve the Hawks well in the OL line blocking schemes in the trenches.
The defense for the Hawks in the line-backing crew will be able to blitz successfully against a slower larger Mule O-line. Disguising these attacks will be up to Defensive Coordinator Coach Brian Hooper. The speed, the LB’s for CL, will be able to run down the Mule QB on a run or outside the pocket should the quarterback getting flushed out.
CLB likes the Hawk’s chances in this scenario. Stopping the run for the Canyon Lake defensive-line may be a problem, as the Hawks, will have to fill some holes on that front four, although there may be some surprise’s for these Hawk faithful in those positions, we’ll see.

This is a winnable game for CL as will be most games this season- the Hawks will be more than capable in competing. In this game will be set base on the Mules not having any turnovers in order to keep this Height team from succumbing to a time eating Slot T offense and getting off the field to have a chance to get up and down the field.
