Canyon Lake Blanks Blanco, 42-35

The Canyon Lake Hawk’s (9-5) defense continued to shine as they continue to keep teams scoring in the 30’s. The result was a seven point win against the Blanco Panthers, 42-35 in a game played Monday night in Blanco.

The Hawks were also without their starting point guard, Doug Hubnik and reserve Paul Davis, which left Coach Jeff Maynard doing some shuffling with the lineup finding the best match-up against the Panthers.

“That is what we got to do, with (Doug) Hubnik sick and (Paul) Davis out of the country,” Head Coach Maynard said. “We knew this was going to be a battle and they (Blanco) get up to play us. It is another notch in their belt with them.”

Canyon Lake started the game like they had just left school for the holidays as their one for eight shooting left them with a balmy three points after the first quarter.

A constant for this team was also in attendance as the Hawk defense held Blanco to seven points allowing the score to be manageable after a cold start.

In seven of the nine wins for Canyon Lake, the defense has held opponents to 39 points or less.

CL reclaimed a one point lead going into halftime as Matt Noyola, the replacement for Hubnik, was able to have some nifty moves in the paint and his energy waking up the slumbering Hawks.

“I knew I was going to start when Hubnik was not going to be here,” Noyola exclaimed. “I had to step up and give (Matt) Magness a break.”

Starting the second quarter, Tavion Pearson drained his first three point shot from the corner pulling CL to within two points of the lead. The Hawks shot 42 percent from the field in the second quarter, to wrestle a one point lead, 16-15 into halftime.

There were four ties and nine lead changes in the back and forth contest.

Blanco had their last lead at 21-19 before Carl Cook decided to cook up some free throws making four consecutive from the line as he drove to the basket to draw fouls on the Panthers big man.

That was the last lead Blanco would have as Canyon Lake relied on another part of their game that had been dormant for much of the year….Free Throws.

Ryan Bustamante also made his first three pointer of the year to give CL their largest lead of the game, 27-22.

The three pointer helped rid Bustamante of an incident that occurred on his first game back over a week ago in the Canyon Lake Tournament, when his first shot, a three pointer hardly drew air much less iron.

The shot gave a whole new meaning to ‘air’ ball.

“After I shot it (the ball), I thought it was going to be a repeat of my first shot,” a relieved Bustamante said.

The shot was nothing but net and it was also one of two shots made from the field in the quarter as Canyon Lake relied on free throws to keep the margin through a tight second half.

The Hawks were 11 for 15 from the line and used their aggressiveness to arrive at nine victories for the season.

“We are a lot better than last year and we will need to dominate at Fredericksburg to get ready for district,” Noyola closed.

Next up for Canyon Lake will be the Fredericksburg Tournament starting, December 27th at 11am against TMI-Episcopal.

The ReSporter will be disclosing All-Time Records as well as this years records as we wait for the next game.

Also, a Coaches Corner will be started this week with Coach Jeff Maynard.
