Yippeee!!! Texas High School Football will start on time when your Canyon Lake Hawks travel the Devil’s Backbone to open their season against Wimberley.

“I was shocked,” Head Football Coach Charlie Drum exclaimed. “I thought it would start after Labor Day but overall I am relieved and happy for the kids. There has been so much doom and gloom and it was good to see we will have the whole season.”

              Way to Go Hawks!!

“I was also shocked that they (UIL) decided to start the larger schools a month later,” Coach Drum continued. “The next thing I realized was having two 5A schools on our schedule and so I had to get on the phone to get those games replaced.”

There were some changing of  chess pieces, but the good news is having a full football season in full bloom.

Changes? The games will have only 50% capacity and there has been some games cancelled and replaced. The UIL stated that the 6A-5A schools will start a month later which cancels the two schools in that 5A category, Alamo Heights and Georgetown East View. The thought at this time will be sticking with the schedule in place now for next year.

Replacement contest has Jourdanton and Beeville filling those Friday night lights. There will only be one exhibition scrimmage now and Boerne will be on that date, that 2nd scrimmage was also scheduled against a 5A foe leaving Coach Drum searching for a willing scrimmage partner.

Alamo Heights was the homecoming date and that has changed to a Taylor contest which will be one of 4 home games this fall.

Losing two 5A opponents and having a tougher schedule is another bi-product of these set of circumstances. This would not be a good time for Coach Drum going to Vegas after losing a coin flip causing this season having just 4 home games.

Jourdanton is ranked in the Top 10 for 3A Division I schools after finishing last year with a 10-2 record. The Indians are returning 30 letterman and 14 starters. This school brings a passing attack after a 2700 yards and 39 touchdowns via the airways from their starting quarterback.  Jourdanton did produce more passing yardage but their starting QB had some rest after steamrolling many of their opponents giving 2nd string players more playing time.

A lethal offensive team that averaged 45 points per game last season.

             Hawks are the Best!!

Beeville Jones will be replacing the East View date and that school was 11-1 last year and had a one-two punch offensively. They won their district last season which comprised a team in Boerne that the Hawk Nation knows as a tough out.

The Trojans rushed for a little over 3600 yards and will be returning only 748 of those yards for this season and returning 575 receiving yards for a team that finished with 1385 yards through the air.

A strong senior class graduated but the experience and being a road game will not be a cakewalk for the Hawks.

Both games will be on the road which will have CL hosting just 4 schools this season and that Homecoming battle will be against Taylor Ducks.

There will certainly be more details for game day while at this writing, the stadium will be at 50% capacity.

Canyon Lake Broadcasting (CLB) will have game action if you cannot attend. CLB is working on having the games video broadcast after the UIL gave permission for schools to have games filmed this year on game night.

Canyon Lake BroadcastingThere is some good news with Canyon Lake’s 6 road games as three of those road contests will be teams, The Lake,  has played each year and are not a great distance for a road trip.

Wimberley, Blanco and Fredericksburg are those battles and it would seem that fans might need to be an early arrival in order for missing that 50% cut-off.

CL’s opponents were impressive last year with all but two schools that did not reach a .500 record last season. Eight of these teams reached the playoffs and carried a combined win/loss record: 75-40.

A tough schedule with the following three ranked opponents according to Dave Campbells Texas Football Magazine.
