Volleyball: Hawks Lose Two but Learning was Key
Canyon Lake lost both games on Saturday in hopes that wins will be forthcoming later during their District 28-4A slate.
La Vernia and Stephenville were both top notch teams that had their A game against a young but lethal Lady Hawk team.
“I think by playing tough teams was like replacing all those 5A & 6A schools we lost due to the virus,” Head Coach Kim Clemons stated. “Our girls need to be in tough situations for improvement. I thought we played well based on the competition and we were going after the ball and I will treat that as a win.”
The La Vernia Bears came out of their chute firing on all cylinders while CL suffered 4 service errors to help add on to this first set loss, 15-25.
The Lake was able to get an early lead, 7-4 but the Bears would control the nets and score the final 6 points for a final 10 point loss.
That 2nd set had the same, 7-4 lead for your home team but an 8 point rally gave LV the final lead and enough separation to stave off Canyon Lake. The Hawks were able to keep the game close and were only down one point (20-21) and (21-22) but a kill and floor error helped bury CL, 22-25.
That 3rd set was much the same way after Canyon Lake was able forge a 6 point rally to erase a, 5-8 Bear lead which had the Hawk’s with a 2 point advantage, 11-9. From this point on, this set had 8 ties and 4 lead changes before a Hawk service error opened the door for La Vernia to finish the contest with a win, 24-26.
In the Hawks contest with the YellowJackets, it was another uphill battle after Stephenville took the first set by 6 points, 19-25. Canyon Lake could not have any sustainable rallies and were down as many as 9 points in this first set loss.
This loaded YellowJacket team was able to stretch their lead to 11 points in that 2nd set, 22-11 and CL was able to realize their best rally scoring 3 points before a Hawk floor error that finished this set with a, 16-25 set back.
Canyon Lake would arise in that 3rd set with both schools at each other’s back-door with the largest lead reaching just 3 points with a Hawk, 9-12 deficit. This set had been tied 6 times up to this point and the YellowJackets would keep a tenuous lead that never grew more than 3 points.
With the score, 15-18, Olivia Robinson would coax an ace and a Macie Goodson kill added to two Stephenville errors had Canyon Lake up, 20-18. But a 2 point serve by the visitors tied the score once again as the set entered the no mistake zone.
Another kill by Goodson that stopped a YellowJacket rally and a tied score, 21 all. Then another score by the Jackets had the Hawks down, 21-22 then Megan Vorhis had a push kill down the line that had Mackenzie Ahlman serving for a chance to get this much needed win.
Emily Pena struck first with a kill and then an ace from Ahlman put this set away, 25-23.
Kaylee Moore sporing a shiner from a previous game finished the day with 40 digs in those two games. To put it succinctly it was a tiring battle that should have Moore sleeping soundly through the night.
“We worked hard and put a lot of effort today,” Moore said with resolve. “No one would be upset about this loss and I was proud on how well we played. Everyone did a great job.”
Moore continued on what she likes about this year’s team, “I feel good about our leadership and we are doing a good job of encouraging our teammates. We are going to get better and we are really young. Every time we step on the court we will get better.”
On thoughts for district? “We are ready for it!! Now!!,” Moore closed.
Pena had a two game total of 22 assists while Vorhis was the high Hawk with 15 kills.
Canyon Lake will be on the road for their next scheduled game in Poth this coming Tuesday when the Freshman start action at 4:30pm followed by the Junior Varsity and Varsity following that contest.
