Hawks Get Ready for Wimberley after Successful Boerne Scrimmage

Canyon Lake did well in their only scrimmage before the curtain raises next week in Wimberley. The Hawks won their two quarters of live football, 28-14 while racking up 389 yards and holding the Greyhounds to 208 yards during the two live quarters.
“Yeah, It was fun hitting someone else instead of each other in our scrimmages,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “We will need to get into better shape and learn from our mistakes. I did like the way we responded to those mistakes, but next week we will have our hands full.”

Coach Drum was talking bout starting the season on the road at Wimberley who enters this season ranked in the Top 5 for 4A-Division II schools.
The Hawks entered this scrimmage with several positions manned with Sophomores or players that are celebrating their first time in a battle against an opponent’s varsity.
After each team went through their scripted plays before the scrimmage went to two 12 minute quarters that were conducted like it was a real game with clock stopping and penalties, etc.
Boerne started on offense and CL’s defense gave up a 10 yard run but would hold the Greyhounds to one yard in those next set of downs forcing a punt.
The Lake had 3 to 4 players that started on the defense last year so a magnifying glass was administered to find who would rise to the top and show Defensive Coordinator Brian Hooper they want one of those spots.
The Greyhound punt was a thing of beauty and was downed on the one inch line, literally.
Canyon Lake’s next play had Ryan Rivali breaking loose for a 99.9 yards down the home team’s sideline for the first score. Rivali was able to avoid a couple of Greyhounds (which were fast) as he stumbled into the end zone.
“Whenever I was with (Eric) Nelson he always pushed us past our limits,” Rivali said while recalling his workouts this year. “Well I was being pushed past my limits on that run.”

On why he lost some speed after the first 70 yards? “It was the very first play and I did not have any adrenaline to help me.”
Rivali who finished with 195 yards rushing after capping his night with a 78 yard jaunt for his second touchdown which was different as those Greyhounds looked like they were Brownhounds as Rivali left them in his wake for his score.
“This second one, I was thinking I had done this before and it just felt better,” Rivali said. “I feel we have a faster team than we had last year on both sides of the ball more than we have ever had.”
Good words for a player that averaged 33 yards per carry in this satisfying scrimmage.
Boerne responded on their next possession going 65 yards in 5 plays to tie the score. Four of those 5 plays went for 12 or more yards without much resistance.
One of those, ‘we have to clean up mistakes,’ statements Coach Drum said earlier was the first of 2 fumbles that stopped a promising Hawk drive on Boerne’s 34 yard line.
But, responding, was in the Defense’s vocabulary with another 3 plays and for this Greyhound crew. Two sacks and an incompletion had another punt to the good guys.
“We will have to win the turnover game,” Defensive End Kolton Ramey said. “But we just told ourselves just keep playing and don’t give up. The coaches have been teaching us to not lose the line of scrimmage and they have been hyping that for a while and we are getting bigger and better every week and we will be ready for next week.”

Canyon Lake’s next drive was highlighted by a 35 yard pass play from QB Peyton McMullen to Tyler Pauly that set the Hawks up on Boerne’s 11 yard line that was capped off by a 6 yard pass to Pauly on a 3rd down call and Hawk lead, 14-7.
Boerne would answer again with a quick 65 yard drive and tied score which ended that first quarter of play.
That 2nd Quarter had CL’s 2nd fumble and the Greyhounds needing just 50 yards for a chance to take the lead, but the Hawk defense did not let that materialise, but not without a scare.
Boerne had their first pass play go 40 yards to the Hawk’s 10 yard line. Responding to mistakes was realized again when these Greyhounds used their 4th down run from their 3 yard line into a Hawk brick wall and no score.
Canyon Lake would drive 97 yards on this set of downs which was capped off by a 78 yard run from Rivali giving CL a score and what would be a win.
After another defensive gem, The Lake would only need a one play run from Sophomore Shane Moss for 38 yards giving the Hawks a much deserved final, 28-14 score.

What would turn out to be playing a half, Canyon Lake had their way on both sides of the ball but it was those offensive explosive plays that paid dividends on this night.
“This was one our best scrimmages as we came out of it with a lot of good things,” Offensive Coordinator Troy Moses assessed. “It was very surprising to perform like that especially well this early against a quality opponent.”
Boerne is picked to win their district this season and with some luck, Canyon Lake will be working for another chance to face Boerne again in the post-season.
Canyon Lake will be going back to work this week as they now prepare for, ‘The Battle of the Devil’s Backbone’.
