CL Hawks JV Refocus in Win over Blanco JV, 41-0
Canyon Lake Hawks JV are more focused on a post game talk after, 41-0 win over Blanco.
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity turned on the pressure in, 41-0 win over the Blanco Panthers on Thursday night at the Hawk Nest .
With a 14 point advantage going into halftime, the Hawks had a decent set of first half stats. The ‘D’ had given up just 20 yards of offense and 2 first downs with one coming from a penalty.

Good times during those intermission talks was not realized however as CL seemed more motivated in that 2nd half, that had an offense, scoring 3 touchdowns and special teams chipping in with a score for good measure.
Defensively, The Lake, was even more impressive. Taking those last 3 garbage plays by Blanco (12 yards), CL held the Panthers to an anemic, 5 yards of total offense on 18 plays.
An impressive way to end this game and ready themselves for district play which starts on the road in Austin next Thursday.
“The switch was not turned on in that first half,” Head JV Coach Bret Hodges surmised. “We were fortunate to be up 14 points. But we played better in that second half.”
On what might have been communicated during the halftime get-together? “We challenged them, with some degree of intestinal fortitude.”
Wow!! That fortitude word combined with intestinal sure did do the trick. The ReSporter would think that those actual words said seemed to have some meaning for this Junior Varsity squad.
The game started with a 3 downs and punt for Blanco and that was quickly followed by a one play drive covering 46 yards by Hawk’s running back Bade Holland. Which resulted in a lead that would never be challenged the remainder of this contest.

Blanco crossed the 50 yard line twice for this game and still needed binoculars from the Hawk’s 45 yard line to see the end zone. In fact, both times the Visitors crossed into enemy territory, CL’s defense forced a sack for a 9 yard and 4 yard loss. That left the Panthers not able to finish any drive on the Hawks side of the field.
One more stat to give an idea of how well CL dominated this game had your Hawks with a total of 4 plays on their own side of the field and one of those plays was before half-time festivities. That would explain the low stat numbers for this slot-t offense with fewer yards to travel before a score.
Offensively, Canyon Lake scored on all 2nd half possessions with an added punt return for good measure.
Offensive/Defensive Lineman, Andrew Miller and Quinton Pearn had a say in how well the trenches were controlled in this contest.

“We saw a lot of tough looks,” Pearn recalled in what the difference between the 1st and 2nd half. “We adjusted after having some ‘motivating’ words at halftime.”
Miller offered his thoughts on this game, “Our first half was flat but we got a speech from coach and learned that we should not under estimate an opponent.”
The ReSporter continued to see if there might be a way to uncover more words that were used to fire up this team for that 2nd half.
“Shouldn’t be happy with the results of that first half,” Running Back Reid Simpson recapped some of the content of ‘the’ talk. “All of our backs come off the ball fast and it doesn’t matter who we are playing…just going to be going.” That last quote was how this team will go into the district part of their schedule.
Canyon Lake’s passing game has improved this year with quarterback Coby Mickey, “I am a first year starter and the offensive line always keeps me safe.”
On the pass play to AJ Acosta that continued to pay dividend when Mickey found Acosta for a 20 yard touchdown pass to start the 2nd half, “Acosta is quick and very fast and has great hands…all I have to do is toss it up and he just runs underneath the ball and we work on that play each week.”
Mickey also gave his thoughts when a pass play is called, “Anytime a pass play gets called we get excited and just have to trust everyone!”
Acosta had two catches with his other reception coming with an interception in that first half.
Ethan Schedlbauer adds punt returner to his football artwork!!
Before that final touchdown, when Peyton McCormick darted untouched for a 31 yard run for a final score, the Hawk Junior Varsity had a special team touchdown that came out of the air, literally.
Coach Hodges stated, “He (Ethan Schedlbauer) is one of the most versatile players on our team…there are only one or two positions that he would not be used for, but he can excel in all of those other positions. So, I went to Ethan and asked if he might like to return a punt…he said, ‘sure, it might be fun.’
Fun was an understatement after the catch and making it through some traffic, Schedlbauer then found some space and angled to the goal line with a result that looked fun too, covering 67 yards for a score.
Schedlbauer’s harder play might have been kicking that extra point after that touchdown return.
“I saw this dude coming and I just juked him and he had an opportunity and just got my back leg but I broke loose and it (the return) was fun and amazing,” Schedlbauer said matter of factly. “I knew another player had an angle on me so I needed to make a cut back and scored from there.”

On playing as a running back and doubling as the kicker, “I have been kicking since the 7th grade and every year I just want to get better each time and increase by 5 yards further each time I kick. We had a sluggish first half which was not what we were expecting, we got it and had to refocus!”
Canyon Lake will work on getting those words spoken during halftime and recorded for further use….just in case!!
