Mountain Valley 8B Squad Comes up Short in Loss to Churchill, 20-12
Mountain Valley 8th grade B squad ran out of time in loss to Churchill last Tuesday at Hawk Stadium, 20-12.
“We played our heart out,” Head Coach Brandon Pawelek stated. “We came out short but we were really competitive.”
Coming up short played out in the first quarter on the Hawks first drive when they could not convert a 4th down try after suffering a 5 yard motion penalty. Instead of needing 2 yards to continue this drive inside Churchill’s 20 yard line and a missed opportunity.
Losing by one touchdown showed the importance of that opening drive that just came up short.
After a MV defensive stop a second opportunity was not realized when the Hawks were left short again on Churchill’s 4 yard line.
Two times on missing a scoring chance would be the difference in a win or loss as Churchill was successful on their next time on offense and covered 96 yards, helped by a 60 yard pass play, for a score and lead, 0-6.
Mountain Valley was not left short on their next try and six plays later tied the game up at 6 a piece. This drive had a heavy dose of Frank Thomas with hard yardage up the gut in getting the rock on every carry. Thomas ended with a game high 147 yards rushing.
“I was just trying to get as much as I could,” Thomas said when responding after rushing for 147 yards. “I am just trying to do my best and I thought we had a chance in this game because we are a good team. If we can compete then we can win!”
The 2nd Half had another quick strike for Churchill’s offense in taking 3 plays covering 59 yards with one explosive 46 yard run to pay dirt.
A tennis match broke out when MV would reciprocate this time traveling 80 yards on 9 plays and a Thomas’ second score from 4 yards out.
This drive had Josiah Rodriguez helping after converting a 4th down play with a 21 yard run and a tied game going into that last quarter.
Churchill did not disappoint their crowd scoring with a little over 4 minutes remaining which upped the score to, 20-12.
The Hawks hurry up offense had some mistakes but Mountain Valley was able to reach the Visitors 24 yard line when a desperation pass was intercepted to end the contest.
On a play before the interception, the Hawks lost a fumble and on a Churchill return also fumbled back to the Hawks with a new fresh set of downs but that one constant called, ‘time’, would stop Mountain Valley as that would be the final score.
A hard fought battle and players on both sides of the ball holding their heads high after leaving it all on the playing field
Mountain Valley will be back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Canyon Middle School for a 6:00pm kick-off.
