Another One Series Loss for CL’s Freshman to SA Reagan, 18-14
CL Freshman were one series away from another win after another tough loss at home, this time to San Antonio Reagan, 18-14.
This season has seen each week coming down to a series of downs that has defined the result and on this day, that same script was prevalent after the Hawks were left a shut door and not allowed in.
“One miss tackle, giving up one big play, a penalty coming at the wrong time,” Coach John Barthels surmised after this 4 point set-back. “We are one possession away from being 6-0 and yet here we are with a 1-5 record.”
On what was seen on this day, “We were going faster today and we got after it today….that is the fastest we have played this year!”
Some numbers that might give some evidence in how this year has played out. CL has been outscored by an average of 4 points per contest and are presently minus -5 in the turnover department. The Hawks have fumbled 20 times and lost 9 of those plays.
A fumble for a slo-t offense can be devastating since most of these miscues occur near the line of scrimmage in reduces valuable yardage.
Speaking of yardage, CL has accumulated more yardage at a 50 yards per game clip giving more angst for the team and Hawk Nation.
Another clue is scoring only 8 points in the 4th quarter while giving up 26 points during that same time period.
Want more? How about a team that has more first downs than their opponent.
This contest started on a high note when CL marched down the filed needing just 4 plays after an explosive run by Caden Rodriguez for 37 yards setting up a Billy Welty 7 yard scamper for a Hawk lead, 8-0.
The Reagan Rattlers were just as lethal after a 55 yard drive taking 6 plays with a 20 yard reception doing the most damage.
The Lake still had a lead after stopping a pass play for the pat, 8-6.
Canyon Lake started with the same resolve on their next possession but after traveling to the Rattler 29 yard line a fumble would stop another golden opportunity to pad a lead.
Reagan drained the clock in responding with an 11 play drive that was finished by a 35 yard run by Armstrong and Rattler lead, 12-8 going into halftime.
Still in this game, the Hawks, forced a punt on Reagan’s first try during the 2nd half. Canyon Lake would score when Alex Mejia took the rock from one yard out and a Hawk lead, 14-12 late in that 3rd period.
SA Reagan responded and scored after CL was stopped at the Rattler’s 13 yard line in taking 3 plays with a killer 77 yard pass play doing the damage, 18-14.
The, One Series Hawks, had a chance when they reached the midfield stripe only to see a fumble stopping their last chance to regain a lead and win as the Rattler’s were would bleed the clock for a win.
Canyon Lake will go on the road next Thursday to Taylor and try to lose the One Series title and secure a win.
Get’em next week and Go Hawks!
