CL Hawks Boy’s Basketball Can’t Catch La Vernia in Opening Loss, 60-47

Canyon Lake started their season with a lot of energy but consistency was absent in loss to La Vernia, 60-47.

“We played really hard and got after it,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “We obviously have to clean up a few things, but overall we did some good things that we can build upon. I thought our defensive energy and effort was really good. We need to do a better job of playing without fouling, but all in all we did well.”

Matt Taliaferro finished with 11 rebounds in loss to open season against La Vernia.

Turning the ball over 35 times was the stat that stands out and on the flip side, Canyon Lake seeing every player with at least one steal helped balance that turnover bug a tad and hence the 13 point loss.

Simple math would let you know that making 15% of those possessions from 3 point land would have had a Hawk win.

“Offensively, we didn’t shoot the ball well, so that always hurts,” Coach Chapman continued. “If we hit a few more outside shots, the game is close coming down the stretch. Very proud of our young men and the effort they gave. We just have to move on, learn and continue to grow each day.”

Matt Taliaferro was one of many trees in the paint that was dominated by blue jersey players. Taliaferro was able to wrestle a team high 11 rebounds with 8 of those coming after a missed Hawk shot.

Tuff Cantu finished as high point with 12 and was perfect from the free throw line (5-5) for The Lake.

Still a lot of moving parts for this team with football still being called home for several other Hawk players.

Canyon Lake will have their next contest on Tuesday with tip-off starting at 6:00pm.
